Show off your patriotism for America by decorating around your home for Memorial Day. Recycle and use a variety of free and low cost craft supplies to create handcrafted decorations that are fun to make on your own or with children.

Patriotic Wind Sock

Recycle an old oatmeal container, juice can or even an empty paper towel roll to make a windsock to show off your patriotism. Use star shaped rubber stamps or sticker to create a pattern on a sheet of blue scrapbook paper. Place several lines of glue on to the back of the paper and wrap it around the container, can or cardboard roll. Cut several red and white streamers to about 12 inches and use tape or glue to attach the end of each streamer to the inside of the container, leaving the streamers hanging from the bottom. Add additional decoration to the windsock with pipe cleaners, foam stars or glitter.

Sparkling Fireworks

Design your own fireworks display to decorate your home. Make a diluted glue mixture by combining 1 part liquid craft glue and 1 part water. Place several blobs of the diluted glue sporadically around a sheet of black craft foam or poster paper. Spread the glue around to create star shapes by blowing through a plastic straw. Sprinkle red, white and blue craft sand mixed with glitter on to the glue. Use one color at a time or mix them together to create a unique color effect.

Signature Placemats

Create patriotic placemats to decorate the table for your holiday BBQ. Cut a sheet of white poster board in to a rectangle measuring approximately 16 inches by 12 inches. Make as many as you need to fill your table. Cut 7 pieces of red construction paper to measure 16 inches by .75 inches. Glue the red lines on to the flag, leaving .75 inches of space in between each one. Cut a piece of blue construction paper, for each placemat, to measure 6 inches by 4 inches. Glue the blue rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the placemat. Use a star paper punch to cut 50 one-inch stars, for each placemat, to decorate the blue rectangle. Sign your name to the back of each placemat and then laminate them to protect your design.
