Patriot's RB Corey Dillon May Retire

Asks for Release

Steven Mottor
Starting New England Patriots running back Corey Dillon has asked for his release. The agent for Corey Dillon will be talking to other teams about their interest in his client. This news comes one day after Dillon talked to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick about his role with the team in 2007. Dillon would like to get more than the seven to ten carries a game he averaged last season. He would like to play for a team that will feature him as their starting running back. Dillon believes he can still perform at the level that helped lead the Patriots to several Super Bowl titles.

Steve Feldman, Cory Dillon's agent, has already sent feelers out to several NFL teams. Dillon was promised that he will be released from his contract by March 2nd at the latest. As his agent reaches out to other teams, Dillon may be leaning towards something else. He has spent the past couple months considering his future. Dillon would like to make sure that he is still healthy when he leaves the game of football. He feels that this might be the perfect time for him to leave. It would enable him the opportunity to spend more time with his kids.

Dillon is thinking more about his health right now. A running back takes the most beating. They are the work horse that gets rode until it breaks down. Many running backs who leave the game of football complain of nagging injuries. This is because they stuck around the game too long. They did not retire when they should have Dillon is starting to feel as if this might be his time. He wants to be able to look ten years down the road and not feel broken down and unable to play with his children.

Remember to not count out him playing for another team though. If the right opportunity is offered to him, he may just take it. This is because he feels like he does have a year or two left in the tank. Even if he does play for another team, the New England Patriots have a running back that is waiting for his chance. Second year player Laurence Maroney shared carries with Corey Dillon last year. He showed signs of a player on the rise. The exit of Dillon could provide an opportunity for both players. Maroney would get the chance to play more on the field. Dillon would get the golden chance of spending more time with his kids.

I only have seen one player who ran over someone on the sidelines come back and help him and see if he was okay. Great player, fine gentleman; the league could do with a few like him

Cory Dillon was a class act wigth the New England Patriots and I personally wish him the best of luck. I'd like to see him back with the Pats wearing his familiar number 28.
