Pattern: Knit This Easy Buttonhole Scarf

Mary Gindling
Have you ever had to hang onto your scarf to keep it from flying away in a high wind? This unique design will keep your scarf securely around your neck no matter what the weather is throwing at you. It is very easy to make, even for a beginner, and with its versatile tailored look, it can be worn with any coat, vest, or cape. It can be made with or without fringe, and looks great either way.

This pattern is also adjustable. For example, if you would like to make a man's scarf , simply add 3 inches to the length of the scarf, for a total length of 45 inches. Because it is so quick and easy to make, you can easily create gifts for everyone on your list, and you can do it without breaking your bank account. So get yourself a set of needles and a little yarn, and have fun!

Note: The model was made with Red Heart Fiesta, but any 4-ply yarn will work well. Plan on using about three ounces for one scarf.

Materials:

1 6-oz skein Red Heart Fiesta (the model was created using Baby White) (Note: 1 6-oz skein will make two scarves)

1 pair of knitting needles or circular needles size 13, or size required to knit to gauge

Yarn needle

Optional: You will need a crochet hook size H if you plan to add fringe

Finished Size:5 inches wide by 42 inches long, not counting optional fringe.

Gauge: 5 sts = 2 inches; 4 rows = 1 inch

Abbreviations:

k = knit

p = purl

k 2 tog = knit 2 stitches together (insert the right hand needle into the next two stitches at once on the left hand needle, complete the stitch just as you would an ordinary knit stitch)

Note: To knit two stitches in the same stitch in row 32, first work 1 stitch in the back of the stitch on the left hand needle, then, without slipping the stitch to the right hand needle, knit a second stitch in the front of the same stitch. Now slide both stitches off the left hand needle. In many patterns, this is simply abbreviated as "inc" or "increase."

Cast on 25 stitches

Row (right side): P2, (k 1 p 1) 10 times, k 1, p 2, turn.

Row 2: k 2, (p 1, k 1) 10 times, p 1, k 2, turn

Repeat these two rows 26 times (28 rows total).

Row 29: P 2 (k 2 tog) 5 times, k 1, (k 2 tog) 5 times, p 2, turn.

Row 30: K 3, bind off next 11 sts, k 1, turn.

Row 31: P 2, cast on 11 st, p 2, turn.

Row 32: K 2 (k 2 in next st) 5 times, k 1, (k 2 in next st) 5 times, k 2, turn.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 42 inches in length. Bind off. Weave in yarn ends using yarn needle.

Optional Fringe: Cut 50 10" lengths of yarn. Fold one strand in half and use crochet hook to knot 25 fringes at each end of scarf. Trim ends of fringe if necessary to even them.

    Great scarf. I've got to get out my knitting needles and see if I remember everything.
