Pattern: Knit This Quick and Easy Lacy Scarf

Mary Gindling
If you're a beginning knitter, or you've been afraid to try lacy patterns because they look too complicated, this scarf pattern is an easy way to get your feet wet. The only stitches you need to know are knit and purl, and the lacy pattern is created by making a simple yarn over and then knitting two stitches together. I'll explain below how to do both of these stitch variations.

I made this scarf in bright fall colors, but it could be done in school colors, or in colors to match your favorite coat or sweater. It can be made in only a few hours, so if you're looking for a quick project to make for Christmas presents, this scarf may well be a good choice for you.

Materials:

1 - 3 or 4 ounce skein worsted weight yarn (the model was made with Caron Simply Soft)
A few yards of yarn in complementary or contrasting colors for fringe (optional)
Knitting needles size 11, or size required to knit to gauge
Crochet hook size H/8.5 mm
Yarn needle

Finished Size: 7 inches wide by 46 inches long, not counting fringe.

Gauge: 3 sts = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch

Abbreviations:

k = knit
p = purl
yo = yarn over (wind yarn over the needle once before making the next stitch, forming a hole)
k 2 tog = knit 2 stitches together (insert the right hand needle into the next two stitches at once on the left hand needle, complete the stitch just as you would an ordinary knit stitch)

Cast on 25 stitches

Row l: K across

Row 2 (and all even rows): p across

Row 3: (k 2, yo, k 2 tog, yo k 2 tog) 4 times, k 1, turn

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until piece measure 46 inches (or desired length), ending with row 3. Bind off, weave in loose ends using yarn needle.

Fringe: Cut 100 12" lengths of yarn. Fold two strands in half and use crochet hook to knot 25 fringes at each end of scarf. Trim ends of fringe if necessary.

    Oh, Genie, please do. You'll have lots of fun and there are wonderful new yarns out there. And you've just made my day. Thanks a million, and good luck!

    I haven't knitted in years, but this scarf is so pretty it's tempting to pick up the needles again.
