It was started by Dr. Robert Doman, a MD, who specialized in seizures and minor brain injuries. He also specialized in treating a curved spine, as well as Cerebral Palsy. . There is nothing harmful to the patterning. It is a series of exercises, such as reaching up onto a overhead later, and going across it. Crawling and reaching one arm up higher than the other. Bending the knees up, switching one to the other. These exercises need to be done 3 times a day, without fail. They really work, if you are consistent with them. Actually, they strengthen the weak muscles in the brain, and cause the signal to skip over the scar tissue from the seizures. Now this is an effective treatment for slight abnormalities and seizure disorders.
These exercises are fun for the kids, and they laugh and it also gives the child and the parent time to enjoy doing them. Even mom can do these, to show the child how easy they are to do. Now with any exercise, it gets easier after you do them for a while. 2 of my 3 children had to do these 3 times a day for a year or 2, and even today, much joy is discussed about these exercises.
The medication for seizures is also given. Plus, the amount of water is limited. This is a very effective treatment.
The reason why the water is restricted is because in a brain injured child the water, goes to the brain, and causes the brain to swell in some cases. Depending on the severity of the brain injury, the liquids are restricted to so many oz's a day.
This could be especially trying for the parent and the child. In other words, the amount of liquids that a person drinks, in a brain injured child, causes the brain to become sluggish. Although, their is a danger in not getting enough liquid for the kidney to function properly. But if a child has seizures and minor abnormalities, and is being treated for these, than 3 or 3 1/2 glasses of fluid a day, in a seizure patient, is about what the child needs, to function properly. 3 or 3 1/2, 8 oz glasses, of water a day is about the right amount. As told to me by Dr. Robert Doman, who is now deceased.
The patterning takes about 30 minutes or less, depending on how much fooling around you do with your child. It is effective in treating these problems. My older girls, did these 3 times a day for quite a while, and in time, they were learning and growing and going to a christian private, school. When they were older they received several EEG's that showed no abnormalities at all. Both of my older girls, grew and learned and because of these exercises, they became very good adults. With jobs, and responsibilities and a family.
There where no more signs of seizures and their were no more signs of learning problems, and they learned to be very consistent in their treatment, of their family. They are smart and beautiful people. Able to carry on their duties at work and at home.
Their has been much controversy over the patterning and also much controversy over the restricted liquids, but it helps, the child develop properly. They also were given exercise for their back, as one of my girls had a curved spine, that if ignored would grow into a severe hump in their back that would cause extreme pain. My older girl had to wear a brace around her shoulders to school, and their were times, that it was very uncomfortable, especially in the heat. Many hours of training and work went into training and patterning these girls. The brace was intended to help the child's shoulders, to straighten out. Today my girls, have nice straight backs, and any signs of a curved spine are completely gone. They are exceptional girls, that were taught to do minor exercise on a regular basis, Exercises such as crawling and reaching up over their head, and the fun one, that I never could do, was walking from below a ladder, with your hands. One arm, then the other. Almost immediately it begins to help the brain signal to skip right over the scar tissue.
This is really very effective, in treating seizures and minor abnormalities, in the child. This is worth looking into, and trying, on a regular basis. This takes dedication and work. Being consistent is the answer to this working. 3 times a day, without fail. This is really something worth trying!!!!
