And Now You Know "The Rest of the Story"

BIRD NAMED JEFF
As a young boy in high school Harvey Aurandt started working for a local Tulsa, Oklahoma radio station KVOO at the suggestion of a teacher. Starting off cleaning and helping out around the offices Harvey soon was aloud to fill in doing commercials and news. Harvey would continue working for while attending University of Tulsa. During this time Harvey would work his way up to announcer and then Program Director.

Harvey moved on from KVOO to join the newscast of KOAM-am in Oklahoma City. From there he would head to St. Louis, Missouri and work at KXOK as Director of Special Events as well as roving reporter.

It was while at KXOK in St. Louis he would meet Lynn Cooper. Lynn was a school teacher and was at the station for a school news program. Harvey invited Lynn to dinner. After a few minutes he proposed to her and from that moment on started calling her angel. A year later she said yes and is still married today. They have one son Paul.

In 1940 Harvey was in Hawaii covering the fleet concentration and was just leaving when Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. He would join the United States Air Force and serve during the war until 1944.

After the war Harvey would find himself in Chicago where he joined ABC affiliate WENR. While there he quickly became one of the most popular newscasters ever. It was during his tenor at WENR in 1946 that he would soon end his in depth feature stories with a tagline that today is what made him one of the most famous radio broadcasters ever.

The Rest of the Story and News and Commentary by Paul Harvey have been one of the most popular radio shows in history. It is estimated over ten million people listen daily twice a day as Paul Harvey brings us his in-depth feature stories and news.

Shortly after signing a $100 million contract Paul went off the air due to damage to his vocal cords. He returned in 2001 and has been going strong ever since.

Over the last fifty years Harvey has won a number of awards, Salesman of the year, Person of the Year and Father of the Year to name a few. In 2006 Harvey would be presented with the prestigious civilian medal Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. Harvey has also been indicted into the Radio Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

Paul's son Paul Harvey Jr. has filled in for his dad from time to time and had even managed to duplicate his dads speaking voice. Up until recently it was assumed that Paul Jr. would replace his dad upon retirement. However in 2006 ABC radio hired Fred Dalton Thompson to fill in for Paul Harvey and will be his successor. Paul Jr. still fills in from time to time and is the shows only writer.

The "largest one-man network in the world" as Paul Harvey News has come to be called is carried by over 400 military network stations world wide, 1,200 radio stations and 300 newspapers. His broadcast and newspaper columns have been reprinted in the Congressional records more then any other commentator. Growing up in the South, I learned to appreciate Mr. Harvey, by the time I was 30 something, however, I had no idea of the profound effect he would have on my ideals as I matured. Mr. Harvey, that is the rest of the story, god day, and bless you!

In the early '80s, I found an "8-track" recording of Paul Harvey, I think it was called, "Our Lives, Our Fortunes, Our Sacred Honor" and had probably 10 or 12 recordings on it. I wish I could find that again.

Great article Jeff, I really enjoyed it but I hate that Paul Jr. isn't taking over.

Haha, I remember a book my dad had of these stories. Then he had me listening to them on the radio. I enjoyed them, but at one point or another would wind up thinking, "Okay, okay, come on, Paul . . . just get to the rest of the story part, 'cuz this who life history is BORING!" But, now I find myself missing it, and every so often I steal that phrase. Which just goes to show you how much impact one guy can have . . . And now you know . . . the rest of the story. (Woops, did it again!) :)
