Paul, the German Octopus who predicted the outcomes of the different matches at the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament, died in his home aquarium in Germany on Oct. 26, 2010. Paul's death is leaving millions of soccer fans and animal lovers completely and absolutely heartbroken. Only time will tell for sure how Germany and the world will remember him, but it will be interesting to see where the story of Paul will go from here. There is little doubt that the cephalopod, one of the smartest animals in the sea, will be remembered and immortalized in some fashion.

Paul first gained worldwide notoriety when his handlers decided to put two feeding containers in Paul's tank. Each container had the exact same food but had the German flag on one and the flag of the nation that was to play against Germany in the next game. Amazingly, Paul was able to predict the winner of every single game by picking the container of food with the winning team's flag each and every time.

Paul the octopus, a cephalopod, which just happens to be one of the smartest species in the ocean, according to scientists, will certainly be remembered. Paul leaves behind a nation of soccer fans and animal lovers worldwide who are already mourning his loss.

Paul joins the ranks of other animals who have done amazing things and worked their way into the consciousness and hearts of the entire world. This club of animals includes Lassie the dog, Secretariat the race horse and Shamu the killer whale.

Secretariat is known worldwide for becoming the first U.S. Triple Crown racing champion in 1973. Secretariat gained immortality in the multitudes of stores, and in Belmont Park there is a statue commemorating the famous horse.

Shamu the killer whale literally put Sea World on the map, as well as the Orca whale species. So Shamu is immortalized worldwide with shows, featuring other Orca Whales named after her.

Then we come to Lassie the dog, who stole everyone's heart. In fairness, there were several "Lassies" used in filming the television shows. Nevertheless, Lassie lives on in syndication and reruns worldwide.

So what is Paul the octopus' destiny for remembrance now that he is deceased?

"We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine. While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action," Stefan Porwoll of the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany told reporters.
