Paul Sterling Smith, Suspect in Alisa Maier Kidnapping Commits Suicide

Missouri state police are reporting the prime suspect in the kidnapping of 4-year-old Alisa Maier, Paul Sterling Smith, killed himself Wednesday evening.

Smith's suicide came just 3 hours after his picture and description was released to the media. Police said it was a series of tips, vehicle records and Smith's registration that gave them a name behind the abduction.

Police said they received a tip from an alert clothing store employee who said they saw a man fitting Paul Sterling Smith's description buying clothes for a small child Tuesday, after Alisa was kidnapped from her front yard in front of her brother.

Police said the tip included a license plate number for Paul Smith and that lead Police to the 300 block of Highway D in Lincoln County, Missouri where Police said Paul Smith lived.

As police officers and the FBI tried to approach his vehicle on the property, the driver allegedly pulled out a gun and shot himself once in the head, killing him instantly.

An Amber Alert was issued after Alisa Maier was snatched while playing with her brother Blake in her front yard Monday evening. She was found in Fenton, Missouri at a car wash around 9:45PM Tuesday night when a caller said a little boy had been abandoned at the car wash and was wondering around. Alisa's hair had been cut extremely short by her abductor. After being checked out at 2 hospitals in the Fenton area she was reunited with her family.

Paul Sterling Smith had just been released from jail in June, where he was serving time on drug charges. Police say he was also a convicted sex offender and plead guilty in 1995 to sodomy on a ten year old. He received a fifteen year prison sentence inn that case.

Paul Sterling Smith had lived at some point in the area where little Alisa was dropped off.

He attempted-Associated press still has him in critical condition as of 7/8/2010. There has been no change of his critical status by any law enforcement agency or reputable media source either. Just bloggers to lazy to fact check in their hurry to get things posted so people read their sad little remblings in a desparate attempt to seem like an authority.
