Paula Abdul Lives to Dance Tonight on CBS

The Former 'American Idol' Judge is Back with the Premiere of Her Baby, 'Live to Dance'

It seems like a lifetime ago since Paula Abdul was tugging at our hearts with her heartfelt commentary on "American Idol," but now she's back- and this time she's running the show.

Forget playing second (or third!) fiddle to Simon Cowell. Starting tonight, Paula Abdul is the headliner of the CBS dance competition "Live to Dance." And it's a routine she knows well.

Way before she hit the charts with her song "Straight Up" back in 1988, Abdul was an esteemed dance choreographer, working with such big names as Janet Jackson- and her famous brothers.

Now, Paula may be back just in time. Fresh on the heels of some relatively bad dancing on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" (okay, in all fairness there was some relatively good dancing, too) America may be clamoring for a new dance show, especially one that focuses more on dancing and less on celeb contestants' popularity.

Like Abdul's previous judging stint, the premiere of "Live to Dance" will feature some of the audition rounds taped last fall, leading up to the final cast of Top 18 hopefuls (some solo dancers, some group dancers) who will compete live.

The grand prize for this dance-off? $500,000. And bragging rights.

Abdul will serve as a mentor and judge on "Live to Dance", along with choreographers Travis Payne and Kimberly Wyatt. Andrew Gunsberg will host the show.

And fear not, America- you will get to vote once the semifinals hit!

With "American Idol" snatching away most of our beloved judges and leaving us with one lone Hot Dawg, it will be nice to see a familiar face on "Live to Dance."

And it will be nice to welcome Paula back where she belongs- on reality TV.

"Live to Dance" premieres on January 4th at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
