Fox News Confirms Paula Abdul's Resignation from the Show

Paula Abdul will not return to her judging seat for the next season of Fox's popular reality and talent show, American Idol. Her announcement on her Twitter feed was followed by an official one from Fox News stating their regret and wishing her well.

There's no doubt in most viewers mind that this was a money deal gone awry. And for many viewers, there is also doubt that the show will be their American Idol without Paula Abdul adding her wacky charm and personality to the panel of judges. For nine years, we watched her antics on the highly popular show.

While there were lots of jokes about her state of mind at times and her rambling comments, she prided herself on being an encourager of the young talent on the show. And that often seemed the case, as the sarcastic bite of Simon Cowell contrasted perfectly with her sweet endearing remarks. The balance of the friendly and affable Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell's sometimes mean barbs, and Paula's fluffy feel good remarks kept the Idol show interesting.

But Ms. Abdul had not been a happy judge this past season, with friends and sources close to Abdul sharing that she felt underpaid and under appreciated by the show's producers. In recent weeks, it was clear that salary negotiations were not going well for Ms. Abdul who earned around 2 million last year from the show.

This year's show added new judge and recording producer, Kara DioGuardi, to the original three. It was a controversial move for some viewers who didn't find the new judging panel to their liking. But Ms. DioGaurdi recently signed a new contract with neither her nor the producer disclosing the amount she would be receiving.

Paula Abdul wanted 20 million for the next three years and was reportedly offered 10 million. Ryan Seacrest, the host of the show, is now considered the highest paid entertainer on TV with a reported salary deal of $45 million for a three year contract.

Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson are still under contract through the next season of American Idol.

Nice report! I don't think Idol will be the same without Paula. But, the word is, we'll be seeing her on Dances With the Stars. That should be good.
