Paula Goodspeed Dies in Front of Paula Abdul's House

Season 5 of American Idol saw the usual number of delusional would-be-singers at the auditions. One of them was the Paula Abdul obsessed Paula Goodspeed, who showed up wearing an ensemble that Abdul herself would have worn, early in her career.

Admittedly, Goodspeed rocked her pink outfit, jacket and headband. It was hard not to like her, even if she did have braces that made it just a little difficult to talk. With a beautiful body, a beautiful face and just a little quirkiness, it looked like she was on her way to Hollywood as she kibitzed with the judges.

Then she sang.

Even Paula, who generally has something good to say, was stunned at how bad she was.

Abdul said she was speechless, and then Goodspeed dug a bit, asking her if that was good or bad. Being pressed Paula said "it's not a great thing."

She honestly seemed to have no idea how bad she was at singing.

The tale though, has a sad ending.

Goodspeed was a fan of Abdul's, so much so that she drew life-sized pictures of her over and over. Although she was near 30, she seemed to be more like a teenager than an adult. After the auditions she tried to contact Abdul.

Simon tried to be mean to her, but his heart didn't really seem to be in it. He wondered how she could sing with "all that metal" in her mouth.

Randy dismissed the comment, but did say "that was terrible."

Strangely enough, it almost felt like Simon was giving her an out or an excuse for being so off-pitch the entire song.

Post-audition Goodspeed was angry and upset, claiming that she was "a little pitchy on a couple of notes" and that "It's not over. I am not going to stop singing just because you don't like my voice."

Later she admitted that perhaps she wasn't ready for the glare of the spotlight.

That may have contributed to her depression. Prior to being found dead in a car near Abdul's house, she attempted to take her life with pills a few months ago.

No word yet on how she did herself in, though the police have ruled this a suicide. Paula was quoted as saying that she was deeply saddened by the death.
