Paying Too Much for Cable? Learn How to Lower Your Cost

Paul Mann
Let's face it, who likes paying tons of money for cable? Ever wish you could lower your cable bill? Well, there's a rather easy way to do it, and all you have to do is make some phone calls, and play around with your cable companies competition.

In nearly every area of the US, there are going to be several cable companies in your area. Most of them would love your service (and why wouldn't they?) and if they need to undercut their price they'll be ready to do it.

So, to start off, get some quotes from your local cable companies. Find out the price they are offering, along with what specials, channels, and extra devices they are giving to you for the price.

Keep everything documented. When you have called everyone, dial your cable company. When a representative picks up, tell them you have been looking for new cable companies, and have seen that they offer lower prices than your current cable package. However, you like your cable company's service, and don't want to leave them.

Tell them the lowest price you got, along with all the features they offered. Representatives are used to these type of calls, and they will automatically begin offering you lower prices and/or more features. But, that doesn't mean you will like the price they offer at first.

If they are not willing to go any lower, kindly ask to talk to their supervisor. Explain the situation to him, tell him the new price you were quoted, and ask if they can go any lower. The supervisor will do one of two things. They don't want to lose customers, so they will haggle a bit more and lower their price. Or, he will say that is all they can do and he is sorry.

At this point tell them you're serious by asking him to cancel your cable subscription after the month (always do this at the beginning of the month, I'll explain why soon). You can also do better by saying that your friends and family are thinking of doing the same, and you'd hate for them to lose more customers than just you. Now the bottom line will probably get a little lower, and they will offer something better. Usually this is fine, but if it's not tell them you are still not satisfied. But, you will keep their offer in mind.

Near the end of the month, the cable company may call back with an even better deal. If they don't, then you have a choice to make. Either accept the deal or go with the cheaper company. At this point however it doesn't matter, you're already going to pay less.

All you need is a few calls, take advantage of their competition, and you will easily get a lower cable bill each month.
