Paypal Targeted by WikiLeaks Anonymous Hackers After Attack on Amazon Fails

Jeffrey Weeks
Web hackers supporting WikiLeaks are attempting to attack Paypal and bring down the company's website after their efforts to bring down Amazon.com failed.

Anonymous, the cybergroup claiming responsibility for attacks on Mastercard and Visa, has targeted the online payment service because Paypal made the decision to stop processing donations to WikiLeaks.

It is the third time this week that cyber-hackers have attempted to bring down Paypal.com. Previously the hackers only managed to slow the system but not shut it down.

The latest effort by Anonymous aims to bring the entire site Paypal to a standstill.

Anonymous had earlier announced the move on Amazon, but failed when they discovered they did not have the required resources.

"We can not attack Amazon, currently," Anonymous tweeted. "The previous schedule was to do so, but we don't have enough forces."

The new attack on Paypal comes shortly after a spokesman for Anonymous told Sky News that Facebook could be the next target.

Facebook accounts used by Anonymous to co-ordinate its work were deleted by the company, as well as groups it uses to communicate with supporters.

Paypal has slowed due to the attacks by Anonymous much to the ire of the company's customers.

Frankly, I feel we are going overboard with freedom. To think liberal democracies are losing ground to a top-down, no non-sense China, and there are many who are playing ino their hands!
I feel we are our own worst enemies - also, if we have friends like these, who needs enemies? good reporting, Jeffrey -siva

I breathed a little sigh of relief when I got my AC performance payment (through PayPal) yesterday. I didn't know how long it would be delayed. Not that it was very much $, but it's the principle of the thing...

It means that PayPal is actually losing a lot of accounts right now to alternative online payment sites. They must have been hurt pretty bad because in the last few hours they just released Julian Assange's money. The won't take donations for Wikileaks but at least he can have his money.
