Peace Cereal Wild Berry Crisp Product Review

A Cereal with a Distinct Taste

Sharon Krawczyk

Description

Wild Berry Crisp by Peace Cereal is generally found in health food stores and natural sections of grocery stores. It consists mainly of corn flakes, oat clusters (which look like pieces of granola) and berries which include freeze-dried strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and boysenberries. There are five one-cup servings in the 10.5-oz box. It is a vegan cereal. For those who care about the environment, the box is made with 100% recycled paper and is printed with environmentally friendly vegetable-based inks. Also noteworthy is that 10% of the profits of the company go to organizations which are working for peace. I paid $3.49 for the box.

Nutrition Information

A one-cup serving of this cereal has 230 calories, 25 of which come from fat. Vegetable oil is listed as one of the ingredients. This cereal is sweetened with milled cane sugar, barley malt syrup, brown rice syrup and tapioca syrup. There are 10 grams of sugar, 4 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber per serving. One serving provides a daily value of 4% of Vitamin C, 2% of Calcium, and 6% of Iron. These amounts may seem low but that's because the company doesn't add vitamins to their cereals like some companies do.

Taste

I ate this cereal with rice milk and thought it tasted very good. The cereal has a tart flavor from the berries rather than having a sweet flavor. I was able to taste some sweetness from the oat clusters, but most of the flavor came from the corn flakes and the tart berries. The pieces of berries were very visible and I could see several of them in the bowl. I found that the cereal stayed reasonably crunchy until I got to the bottom of the bowl rather than getting soggy. I also tasted the dry cereal out of the box and found that it tasted quite good that way too. It tasted sweeter in its dry form than with the rice milk.

Final Analysis

I felt that this was a tasty cereal with an interesting flavor although I'm not sure how much healthier it is than some of the cereals in the regular grocery aisle. I prefer to purchase cereals that are not made with milled sugar, so I am disappointed that at the very least, this cereal wasn't made with evaporated cane juice or better yet, just barley malt, brown rice syrup and tapioca syrup. I am also disappointed that this cereal has oil added to it. I also feel that this cereal is rather pricey since you get only 5 servings in the box.

Overall, based on the fact that this cereal is not sweetened exclusively with white sugar and it has an environmentally friendly box, I feel that it may be a somewhat better choice than some other more popular cereals. If I were to purchase this cereal again, it would not be because I thought it was a healthier choice, but because I was looking for the distinct tart flavor that it provides.

It's good to know that some of the proceeds of the cereal help charities.
