Peace with Circumstances: Philippians 4:11-13:

Truly Inspiring

Bud Young
In Philippians 4:11-13 Paul wrote:

I have learned to be content in any circumstance. 4:12 I have experienced times of need and times of abundance. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment,8 whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing. 4:13 I am able to do all things9 through the one10 who strengthens me.ยน

4:13 is probably one of the most quoted scriptures in modern religion. It has been used as a motivating rallying cry for those who want to believe that God will help them do whatever they want. This is not what Paul was trying to convey with this statement.

Paul was in the process of expressing his gratitude to the believers at Philippi for their material support. He was making the statement; even though I am going through materially difficult times Christ has taught me how to be content. Paul knew that through his relationship with Christ he was able to be content no matter what life through at him.

This set of scripture is truly inspiring because 4:13 goes beyond peace with circumstances. Christ encourages and strengthens us. He is there to help us make choices that are in line with who he created us to be. We all have limits we are born with. We may not be able to go out and just do whatever hits us in that moment. With Christ's help, we can do whatever it takes to be the best person we can be by staying true to who we actually are.

You are so right! This scripture is so often mis-used. People read it in a selfish sort of way. What God wants us to know from this is that we can do whatever it take to accomplish His will in us, in any circumstances, whether in poverty or abundance, if we truly seek to glorify Jesus Christ in our lives. I think that too many people try to USE Jesus when we are called to SERVE Jesus. Somehow they think their will is automatically GOD'S will. (I've learned the hard way, that what I want is not always what God wants.)

    Thanks for a stimulating article.

Great reminder of how to have joy and peace - if not happiness - in any circumstance.
