Peanut Butter & Company Sandwich Shop in New York City: Offbeat Eating

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is one of the most beloved of all sandwiches. Many of us remember finding this simple delight in our lunchboxes as children. The pairing of the peanut flavor with the sweetness of jelly (traditionally grape jelly) is also a comfort food for adults. But would you ever think that a restaurant that mainly sells peanut butter sandwiches could become popular and profitable? In 1998, Lee Zalben ("The Peanut Butter Guy") decided to open that very kind of sandwich shop.

Located at 240 Sullivan Street in Greenwich Village in New York City, Peanut Butter & Co. offers customers nearly a dozen peanut butter sandwiches as well as several non-peanut butter sandwiches, desserts, and drinks. Peanut Butter & Co. makes sandwiches that feature regular peanut butter, like the Lunchbox Special (peanut butter and jelly or preserves) and The Fluffernutter (peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff). The Peanut Butter Cup sandwich combines peanut butter and Nutella. They also serve some unusual twists on the typcial peanut butter sandwich. In homage to the King of Rock and Roll, The Elvis features peanut butter, bananas, and honey, grilled on bread. Some customers even eat it with bacon! It may sound like a weird combination, but for some reason, it works! Of course, what peanut butter-themed restaurant would be complete without an "Ants on the Log" dish? Yes, they even serve that childhood favorite!

Peanut Butter & Co. also makes their own flavored peanut butter, which is used in specialty sandwiches. The Heat is On sandwich is made with their Spicy Peanut Butter, pineapple jam, and grilled chicken. They use their White Chocolate Peanut Butter in the White Chocolate Wonderful sandwich along with orange marmalade. If your sweet tooth still isn't satisfied, try the Dark Chocolate Dreams sandwich. It features cherry jam, coconut, and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter.

However, if you're not in the mood for a peanut butter sandwich, Peanut Butter & Co. also serves tuna fish sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, bologna sandwiches, and chicken salad sandwiches.

This sandwich shop also serves a host of mouth-watering milkshakes and desserts. Their peanut butter milkshake recipes include peanut butter mixed with honey, jelly, marshmallow fluff, coffee, and banana. For a peanut butter dessert, try a parfait, tiramisu, pie, or cookie. Signature peanut butter desserts include Death By Peanut Butter (a sundae of ice cream, Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch cereal, and peanut butter chips) and Bananarama (their take on a banana split).

So, if you're in the Greenwich Village area and have a craving for peanut butter, Peanut Butter & Co. is one place you definitely need to check out!
