The FDA has been investigating a string of Salmonella Outbreaks that has resulted in eight deaths, affected 43 states, and has caused more than 500 sicknesses nationwide. The FDA has concluded their investigation and has determined that the Peanut Corporation of America is responsible. Not only are they responsible, but they have had 12 reports of Salmonella since 2007. Due to the fact that the FDA has shown a genetic connection between the current Salmonella Outbreak and a strain of Salmonella identified from the Peanut Corporation of America's Blakely, Georgia facility, the Peanut Corporation of America (or PCA) is recalling all peanut products and peanut paste dating back to 2007.

Peanut Corporation of America has announced that they are expanding their recall of peanut products.

The affect of this recall has yet to be seen, however it will undoubtedly be huge. The Peanut Corporation of America does not sell products directly to consumers, but rather sells to companies and institutional facilities, who then use the peanut butter foodstuff in their products. Not only does this include food goods, but it also affects pet food. As more companies identify the peanut butter, peanut paste, and other peanut goods that they've used in their products, we can expect more companies to issue recalls.

It is important to realize that the first report of the current Salmonella Outbreak, that has been linked back to the Peanut Corporation of America, occurred during mid September, 2008. This has been a long going, investigation with the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control, and many state departments working in conjunction to identify the source.

When health care providers and officials treat illnesses they make reports that are filed with the state department. This alerts state departments to any potential health care crises that might be underway. The FDA began receiving numerous reports from state department's across the country of Salmonella. The strain of Salmonella, however was of the same DNA type, Salmonella Typhimurium. This gave the FDA the suspicion that the outbreaks were all related and originated from one main source. Through testing, investigations, and working with the Centers for Disease Control, the evidence was presented that showed the Peanut Corporation of America's Blakely, Georgia facility was the culprit.

The expansion of the peanut recall includes the following food stuffs, peanuts (dry and oil roasted), granulated peanuts, peanut meal, peanut butter and peanut paste. Manufacturers and institutions will be able to identify the recalled items by the following lot numbers:

Peanut Butter All Styles All Sizes All Lots beginning with 7, 8, or 9

Peanut Paste All Styles All Sizes All Lots beginning with 7,8, or 9

Peanut Meal All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7, 8, or 9

Peanut Granules All Styles All Sizes All lots beginning with 7, 8 or 9

Additionally, all products that other companies have made using these products will be affected by the recall. If you have any questions regarding the recall or for further information you can contact the Peanut Corporation of America or the FDA.
