Peasant to Princess

April Higney
I was young, foolish and niave.
You set the stage, pulling the curtain over my eyes.
A play. You standing in the center of it all,
and I, the opener, revealing my heart, too young to realize.

You acted out all the motions of love,
and my part not good enough to be your Juliet.
Your role, high and mighty. You were the king.
I was your peasant, if ever I was anything.

"Hush now darling, your script carries no voice,
your tears should not be heard now.
You must wear your mask of smiles,
for your cries are unheard anyhow."

"I will not carry on in silence,
if I hold a sadness I will cry it out.
I will reveal a true smile un-masked,
for you are not Romeo, and you know nothing of what love is about."

I was young, foolish and niave.
You set the stage, pulling the curtain over my eyes,
but I became a princess for the white knight to see.
You lost your throne, your control, meeting with demise.

My knight did not steal me away,
for it was I who had left the dungeons, chains broken,
escaping from your darkened reign, finding true love alas'.
The unwritten script finally spoken.
