I'm fairly new to the Orlando, Florida area and finally getting around to upgrading my landscape. I like no maintenance yards that have lots of flowers and use native plants to attract birds and other wildlife. The sand at my home is quite sandy and even the amendments you buy to enrich the soil, like steer manure, contains sand. Weeds are prolific. To minimize my use of chemicals and to keep the weeds down in the yard and to enrich the soil and feed plants, I like to use a mulch. The local vegetative mulches work good, but I don't like anything that leaves slivers or leaches out the nitrogen. To find mulch, I asked at the local Plant Nursery, Lukas Gardens, where do I find gravel and mulch. They sent me to Pebble Junction in Sanford, Florida.

Why Use Gravel as a Mulch

Gravel is a form of mulch on the garden in that it helps retain water content in the soil and by collecting water content from the air. I have used gravel on top of ground cloth or no weed cloth on my flower beds in Washington State. What I found about gravel was my weeding was nearly eliminated. Once a year I had to pull out the encroaching grass but otherwise I was in the clear. I typically saved water by once a week dumping liquid fertilizer directly on the roots of a plant or sprinkling fertilizer around the plant. The only downside of gravel is it can burn plants by getting to warm and reflecting too much sun especially when you fertilize.

Popular choices include red lava rock, washed shell, granite chips, river rock, jade pebbles, Florida sunshine ( a yellowish-brown colored rock) and a huge variety of other colors in shades of black, brown, gray, blue, white, red, yellow. Sizes range from pea gravel half inch to 6".

Pebble Junction, Sanford Florida Offers Good Service and Delivery

The young man that offered up all the facts along with a price sheet was very helpful and actually came out into the pouring down rain to be of service. The price sheet includes items like ground cloth, pins to hold edging and ground cloth in place, the rock benches and much more. He also explained that delivery could be of 1-4 pallets for a single cost, while rock could be deliver in a special bag and delivered the same way. They also sell bagged rocks and gravel at higher costs. He also referred us to Thomas Moreno Gardens when we asked about other plant nurseries.

We didn't buy anything today, but I was able to get helpful prices for estimating the landscape work I'd like done and specific types of gravel that I'd like to use when my garden plan is approved by the Home Owner's Association.

We initially went on a Sunday and found they are normally closed for business on Sunday. They are open from 8 am-5 pm on weekdays and from 8 am - 1 pm on Saturday.

How cool. I wish that I could live in a place that is still bursting with plant life and is actively warm.
