Pectin for Weight Loss

What is Pectin Anyway?

Pectin for weight loss? I thought it was an ingredient in jams and jellies. How can it be good for you? How can jelly and jam help you lose weight with all that sugar? Usually, when a conversation comes up about pectin, it's in reference to how much you need to make jelly. In this instance, we're referring to the ingredient in it's natural state. Pectin is contained in fruits and vegetables. Certain fruits are quite high in pectin. Eating them helps with weight loss when consumed on a regular basis.

Fat Trapper

We've all been tempted to buy fat flushing products at one time or another. Who needs special diet formulas that trap fat and flush it from your system? The pectin in fruits and veggies forms a gel which traps fat and cholesterol before they can enter the blood stream. Pectin does not absorb into the bloodstream. It carries these nasties right out of your system.

Cholesterol Buster

Cholesterol levels can soar when you are overweight. Aside from carrying cholesterol out of the body, pectin works for weight loss by lowering cholesterol even more. Pectin does not digest. It remains in the digestive system until it passes. It becomes food for digestive system bacteria. These bacteria give off chemicals that halt cholesterol production in the liver.

Filler Upper

How about that energy bar that works like a stomach band? It makes your stomach feel full so you eat less. Leave it on the shelf and lose weight with pectin. Yet another way pectin helps with weight loss is by filling you up. Pectin expands in the stomach to make you feel full. By eating lots of high pectin fruits and a plant based diet, you will decrease your appetite and eat less empty calories.

Sugar Stabilizer

Pectin can help diabetics, along with keeping calorific sugar out of the bloodstream for weight loss. Pectin slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This keeps blood sugar balanced. Eating plenty of pectin rich fruits and vegetables doesn't just help with weight loss. It's great for helping diabetics keep their blood sugar levels uniform.

High Pectin Fruit

There is pectin in every plant. It works to hold together the cell walls. Still, some fruits are higher in pectin than any other fruit or vegetable. Apples contain a large quantity of pectin. In fact, apples are the main fruit which pectin (for making jams and jellies) is derived from. Other good sources of pectin include citrus fruit, bananas, pears and plums.
