Pedal Cabs
A pedal cab is pedaled by a driver. They hold 2-3 passengers. The pedal cabs in Fayetteville, Arkansas, are trikes. The driver sits on a standard bicycle seat, the passengers sit behind the driver on a bench seat. Some of the cabs are equipped with a motor assist, but gasoline engines are not allowed.
The pedal cabs will take passengers up and down the hills of Dickson Street and the surrounding area. Not only are the cabs good for the environment, they are sure to keep the drivers in very good shape.
For now, there are only a few cabs available. Once the companies have determined how many cabs are needed each night and have completed their hiring, more pedal cabs will be available.
Who
Fayetteville Pedicab and Mainstreet Pedicab Companies are the only two companies that have approval to operate pedal cabs in the city. The city of Fayetteville has strict requirements regarding the operation of pedal cabs. Approval from the City Council is required prior to a company setting up operation.
Fayetteville Pedicab Company has a total of 8 pedal cabs ready and available for hire. Mainstreet Pedicab Company will start service with 2 pedal cabs, once they are delivered.
Rates
As of August 27, 2010 the rates for Fayetteville Pedal Cab are $1.00 per person and Mainstreet Pedal Cab is operating on a tips only basis. The City Council has approved a maximum rate amount of $8.00 per ride.
Entertainment District
Dickson Street is the main thoroughfare in the entertainment district. Many of the area's bars, restaurants and the Walton Arts Center are either right on Dickson Street or just off of it on School Street or West Street. The pedal cabs will make parking in the free private lots more attractive, as one can take an inexpensive cab to the main attractions in the entertainment area instead of parking in the paid areas.
