Pedophile Guidebook Removed by Amazon Amid Firestorm Controversy

Sometimes the Good Guys Win!

Gayle Crabtree
Only one thing spreads quicker than bad news on the internet and that's bad news involving children and sex. Before the pedophile guidebook was removed by Amazon, the nation's largest online retailer found itself in the middle of a fast and furious firestorm.

When activists and bloggers on the world wide web found out that a pedophile guidebook was for sale on Amazon the news traveled more rapidly than you can say "viral". It was more like "viral 2.0", on speed. Within hours, a Facebook page was set up and people were visiting Amazon and furiously sending "feedback" to demand that the book be removed. People began urging each other to boycott the company until it complied.

It took several hours but the complaints about the pedophile guidebook were heard and acted upon.

MyFoxBoston.com reports that on Wednesday Amazon was defending the right to make the book available.

At about 9:00 pm (EST) Wednesday evening, this author visited the site and phoned Amazon to request removal of the pedophile guidebook. The company representative told her that they were "taking a look at it" and gave directions for how to leave feedback. Those directions appear on this article.

On Thursday, November 11, 2010 this writer received email confirmation at 2:43 p.m. that she had been hoping to hear. The official email from Amazon confirmed that the pedophile guidebook was removed. A screenshot graphic is attached to this article. (The author's personal address has been blurred but comments may be left below.)

Answers.com defines a pedophile as "an adult that is sexually attracted to children". In addition to getting the pedophile guidebook removed by Amazon another way that we can protect our kids is by having them take a self-defense class.

Anny Jacoby is the founder of Realistic Female Self Defense. She reminds us that self-defense is "not about strength, it's about knowledge". Anny works with Project Safe Girls to give girls aged 5-23 some tools to protect themselves.

As the pedophile guidebook removed from Amazon indicates, protection for both boys and girls is important. American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry estimates that there are 80,000 reported cases of child sexual abuse annually. These numbers may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Taking action to remove the pedophile guidebook on Amazon is just one of the steps we can take to protect our children. The State of California, Department of Justice have these suggestions:

Inform children that it's wrong for adults to engage them in sexual activity.
Get to know the people that our children spend time with.
Practice basic safety skills.
Listen to our children.
Talk openly about sexual assault of both adults and children.
Get involved in your community.

Pedophilia has not only linked with child sexual abuse but with sex tourism and child trafficking. Anytime an adult has sex a child it isn't just wrong, it's criminal. If you know of a child that is being exploited by a pedophile or otherwise abused do the right thing. Report it. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has a CyberTipLine on their website.

Links to sex offender registries is also available on the NCMEC website.

Yesterday's outrage that succeeded in getting the pedophile guidebook removed by Amazon shows how fast positive change can happen when we act together. Hopefully, the pedophile guidebook removed by Amazon won't become available elsewhere. If it does hit the internet again, the world will be watching and in a few hours it too will be gone.
