Pegasus Restaurant: A Little Bit of Greece in Downtown Detroit

If you live in any large metropolitan area, or have visited one you have more than likely heard of areas called, China Town, Mexican Town, and possibly even Greektown. Detroit is no different and has a Greektown and Mexican Town of its very own.

Pegasus Taverna is located in Downtown Detroit's Greektown. Pegasus Taverna offers its diners traditional Greek food as well as American fare. One of my favorite items from their menu is their Chicken Gyro. The traditional Gyros is made with strips of thinly cut lamb, but I prefer to eat chicken and therefore on most visits to Pegasus for lunch or dinner, I order the Chicken Gyro with rice, though you may also choose french fries instead. I order the rice with the Greek red sauce which has just a hint of cinnamon in it. The Chicken Gyro is served with pita bread, onion, tomato and tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki sauce is made with Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, salt, and dill. Pegasus' tzatziki sauce cannot be beat and is a wonderful compliment to their tender chicken. The tzatziki sauce is served with the traditional gyro as well, and can be ordered as an appetizer as well.

Another fabulous menu item at Pegasus is hummus which is served with warmed pita bread. The hummus is made with ground chick peas, lemon juice, tahini oil, garlic, salt, and olive oil. Hummus can be used as a spread or a dip, and can be eaten on the fresh baked bread that is served to each and every table at Pegasus. The Greek Salad at Pegasus is also a winner. The salad is made with lettuce, chick peas, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, beets, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and a tangy Greek dressing. You may also add grilled chicken to your salad for a little extra protein.

Besides the traditional Greek menu items offered at Pegasus they also offer a number of American items including hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and chicken tenders. These items are served with french fries and are equally as good as all of their Greek menu items.

Besides the Greek appetizers, salads, and entrees you can also experience the traditional greek dessert item baklava. Baklava is made with phyllo dough, butter, cinnamon, pistachios, sugar, vanilla extract, and honey. Pegasus' baklava has just the right amount of honey and nuts to not be overwhelmingly sweet.

When you visit Pegasus come hungry, but be advised that you will leave feeling full, even when only ordering an entree and not eating their freshly baked bread with butter.

Besides the wonderful food items, Pegasus also has a full bar, which offers complimentary appetizers during its weekday happy hour.

The wait staff at Pegasus is always fast and friendly. During peak lunch hours of 12 to 2pm you may want to ask for your bill when your food is delivered to your table if you are limited on time. I advise doing this no matter what restaurant you visit on your lunch hour from work, just because it is easy for you to lose track of time while eating out.

Whether you are coming to downtown Detroit for a sporting event or to visit the Greektown Casino stop by Pegasus Taverna for a little taste of Greece in your own backyard.
