Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy

Private Pen
Pelvic pain is experienced most commonly during the mid to late stages of pregnancy. During pregnancy, your pelvic joints relax to increase the size and flexibility of space available for the birth canal. This may cause pressure on the sciatic nerve, with pain in the pelvic area and down the thigh into the leg. Another source of discomfort may be the pressure of your growing uterus on the ligaments that support it. This may cause sharp, shooting pains on either side of your abdomen.

Warmth may help you relax and bring some relief. Try a hot water bottle or a warm tub bath. Some women find massage is very helpful.

Try the commonly used "wheelbarrow" exercise. You'll need your partner's help for this exercise.

A change in position may help you. Experiment with different positions to find the one that brings you the most relief. Sit for a while with your feet elevated. Try sleeping on your side, with one leg forward and the other back, as if you were running.

If you are constipated or have a bladder infection, you also may experience some discomfort in the pelvic region. If your pain is so severe or persistent that you can't stand it, consult with your doctor. Don't self-medicate, but don't suffer either!
