Penn State Football Schedule Opens 2010 Season with Style

The 2010 Penn State football schedule is now under way. To open the 2010 Penn State football schedule, they hosted Youngstown State, and while this wasn't the most impressive of opponents, Penn state put them away pretty easily. It didn't start out as favorably as it ended though, as Youngstown State was leading 7-3 at the end of the first quarter off an 80 yard touchdown pass from Kurt Hess to Dominique Barnes. It was a shock to the system to be sure, but Penn State bounced back with three scores in the second quarter to take a 16-7 lead heading into halftime.

The final score of Penn State's first game was 44-14, and Penn State begins the 2010 football season undefeated. Penn State went for 371 total yards with freshman quarterback Robert Bolden leading the way with 239 yards and two passing touchdowns. The running game wasn't quite as strong, but the team effort ended up with 132 total rushing yards on the game. Kicker Collin Wagner hit on three field goals and four extra points, with his most impressive kick coming as a 49-yard field goal in the victory.

This was a good warm up game for the Penn State Nittany Lions, as now they have to travel to Alabama to play the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Penn State kicks off at 7 p.m. EST on September 11 against the Alabama Crimson Tide, in a game that could spell out the fortunes for the 2010 Penn State season. If they can pull an upset down in Alabama, it could thrust them up in the national rankings as they head towards the Big Ten season. After Alabama, they have two easier games on the schedule against Kent State and Temple before they take on Iowa in their Big Ten opener on Saturday, October 2.

Penn State came into this weekend ranked No. 19 in the country, but should go up in the polls after No. 15 Pittsburgh was knocked off by Utah. Pulling an upset over Alabama would put them into the national title picture, but that is a pretty tall order to ask this early in the season. On the flip side, a loss to Alabama won't keep them out of the BCS picture, because they could still win the Big Ten and head to the 2011 Rose Bowl
