Pennsylvania Working to Grow Environmental Awareness

According to the Pennsylvania Office of the Governor news release, Pennsylvania has announced the $1 million investment that will be given to support the 128 environmental projects that can impact the world.

The Governor Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania has announced that he will award a $1 million grant to 128 different projects done by schools, universities, non profit groups, as well as the county conservation districts that will promote environmental education. By doing this, the Governor will help a new generation of residents who will be educated and aware of the need to protect all of Pennsylvania's natural resources.

Governor Rendell who prepared a statement said "Pennsylvania's focus on environmental education has created a generation of young people who are more environmentally aware and engaged than ever before," he also adds that . "It is our goal, through these projects, to inspire students to become life-long stewards of their environment. By equipping our teachers and students with better tools and broader knowledge, we educate our children to understand the consequences their choices and behavior have on their surroundings."

The grant amounts that will be given will be anywhere from $857 to $20,000 for projects that range from creative, and hands on lessons for teachers and students. This program that allow the grants is part of the Environmental Education Act of 1993, which says that 5 percent of all pollution fines and penalties that have been collected for that year be set aside for environmental education.

Counties in Pennsylvania that will be receiving part of the $1 million grant are Allegheny County, Adams County, Armstrong County, Beaver County, Bedford County, Berks County, Bucks County, Cambria County, Centre County, Chester County, Centre County, Chester County, Clarion County, Clearfield County, Crawford County, Cumberland County, Dauphin County, Delaware County, Elk County, Erie County, Fayette County, Franklin County, Forest County, Fulton County, Jefferson County, Lackawanna County, Lancaster County, Lebanon County, Lehigh County, Luzerne County, Mercer County, Miffin County, Monroe County, Montgomery County, Northumberland County, Philadelphia County, Pike County, Schuykill County, Somerset County, Sullivan County, Susquehanna County, Tioga County, Washington County, Westmoreland County, and York County.
