Pentecost Sunday Crafts

While children are very familiar with Easter, many may be less familiar with Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost Sunday occurs 50 days after Easter. It marks the beginning of the Christian church as well as the reception of the Holy Spirit. Children love to celebrate birthdays and they can celebrate the birthday of the church on this special day. Pentecost crafts are a fun way to help children learn about the significance of Pentecost Sunday.

Pentecost Candle Crafts:

Children are very familiar with birthday candles. This super easy Pentecost craft will allow them to make a candle to celebrate the birthday of the Christian church.

Materials:
Paper towel tubes
Construction paper
Scissors
Red and/or orange tissue paper
Tape

Kids can simply wrap a paper towel tube with colored paper and add a snippet of tape on the top and bottom to hold the paper. The liturgical color of the day on Pentecost Sunday is red so red would be especially appropriate but any color would fun.

Give kids squares of red and orange tissue paper. Show them how to put their finger in the middle of the squares and then pull the tissue paper up around their finger. Now they will simply stuff the "flames" into the candle.

Fun Pentecost Activity:

Now that everyone has their Pentecost candle crafts made, let kids hold their candles and sing "Happy Birthday" to the church. At the end they can blow on the flames that won't go out but will create a fun flutter.

Pentecost Prayer Dove Mobile Craft:

In scripture (Mark 1:10) the Holy Spirit descended like a dove on Jesus at his baptism. The dove is a commonly considered a symbol of peace but is also a symbol of the Holy Spirit. A dove mobile is another lovely way to for kids to celebrate Pentecost and record their prayers of thanksgiving for the church, the Holy Spirit or friends, family and other gifts.

Each child can create an individual dove mobile or a family or Sunday school class could work together to create one dove mobile for the home or classroom.

Materials:
White construction paper or white foam sheets
Hole puncher
Pencil scissors
Markers
Yarn
Sticks (about 12 inches)

After cutting out the doves, kids can write their prayers and praises on the doves. Use a hole puncher to add a string and tie the strings onto a stick that is about 12 inches long.

To create the hanger, spread out a length of yarn about a yard long placing the mobile stick in the center. Now the tie the yarn onto each end of the stick and pull the ends up together and tie them. This will create a triangle. The dove mobile can be hung from the ceiling, on a window latch or even used as wall hanging to remind children of their prayers long past Pentecost Sunday.
