A huge variety of people use twitter everyday. Adults and teens, your best friend, websites, bands and celebrities along with most every other type of person you can think of. Most teens and kids are not as interested though. A majority of the accounts are owned by people aged 20 and up.

Most people use Twitter because it is a quick, easy and fun way to communicate on your own terms. You don't have to quit what you are doing like a phone call and it's not like email either. The messages are short and to the point. People are flocking to Twitter for multiple reasons, including:

  • Getting answers. People can follow or be followed by like-minded people and post questions or answers to other peoples questions. If you do not have many following you you can click here to go to a website the instantly let's you search for other people on Twitter with any interest.
  • Getting to know people. Twittering offers a connected sense for people over time. If you work from home or you are a stay-at-home-mom you can get to know the tiny details of peoples lives, forming strangers into acquaintances and friends.
  • Remembering events and times. Some parents use Twitter to record details of their lives. Eventually they end up with an easy to search on line diary of what happened on a certain day at a specific time.
  • Staying in the know. News can travel very fast on Twitter. Some organizations, including schools and forward-thinking businesses twitter to keep members in the know and up-to-date on current events.
Joining Twitter is extremely easy. Just log onto www.twitter.com and "Join the Conversation." You will need to provide your name, user name. password and email address. After that you can then use the search box to find people of interest, authors, celebrities and any others that you are interested in following.

If you follow just a few people for a few days it will be much easier to get a feel for how the service works. If you log onto www.twittervision.com you can see random postings from around the world. You can also purchase the mobile applications such as, TweetDeck or TwitterFeed. These will send messages to your cell phone or desktop computer.

If you are interested in sending your own tweets you need to have at least a few followers. You can start with your friends and co-workers. The default setting on Twitter is set to let anyone see what you wrote as soon as you press "send." Twitter allows you to see a list of all of your followers and lets you block certain followers and also the distribution of all of your tweets. Simply click on settings while you are logged in and click on "protect my updates."

Like all social networks you will need to be cautious. Do not publish too much personal information and be careful with what you tweet about because everyone else will be able to so it also. Some people actually use two accounts. One for family and one for work or acquaintances.

Just like everything else in life there are pro's and con's. You do not need Twitter and you will be fine with out it. But it can be beneficial to some people. The only way to really know is for you to use the advice from this article and give it a try.
