People Food for Dogs

When I was a child, I remember spending an afternoon with friends who owned a dog. During lunch time my friends and I were given hot dogs. The dog sniffed his bowel of hard dry pebbles and made a whining sound as if he was saying, "I don't want this." He then walked over to the table, sat at my feet, and looked up at me with a begging look in his eyes. So I feed the dog my hot dog. He ate it hungrily. My friends then feed their dog their hot dogs too. The dog gobbled them up and began dancing around.

"Since you ate my lunch, I'm going to eat your lunch," I told the dog.

I picked up a handful of dog food and put it in my mouth. Immediately I spat it out. It tasted terrible! It was disgusting! It was absolutely gross!

"No wonder the dog did not want to eat his food!" I told my friends.

Dogs should not be made to eat dog food. Before the invention of dog food dogs ate the same food as their owners ate. Dogs have taste buds, and they want good tasting meals too. Why else do they sit at their master's feet and beg for their food during meal times. However, cooking a meal for you dog can be extra work. It is much easier to just pour dog food in a bowel and set it on the floor. The dog would eat it when he gets hungry enough.

However there are some people who do not mind preparing "people food" for their dogs. To them their dogs are like little children. For these people here are some suggested foods and meals to feed their dogs.

Dog Nutrition
Dogs need all the vitamins and minerals that people need to maintain good health. Nutritional foods to buy for dogs that contain multiple essential vitamins and minerals for good health are:

Beans (dried, or canned; canned beans can be cheaper than canned dog food)
Rice
Ground beef
Corn (canned or frozen)
Peas (canned or frozen)
Fresh celery
Tomato sauce
Apples
Oranges
Bananas
Eggs
Bread
Cheese

Doggie Meal Time
Breakfast
In the morning for breakfast a dog can be fed can of tasty pork 'n beans, a hard boiled egg, a piece of toast with butter, some cheese, and even an orange. This breakfast provides a good source of protein which dogs need, and it is easy to prepare.

Lunch
For a lunch time meal dogs can be given cooked hot dogs and rice. The hot dogs should be cut up and stirred into the rice. Celery should be diced and stirred with the rice and hot dogs.

Dinner
For dinner dogs can be given cooked ground beef, beans, rice, and tomato sauce stirred together. To make sure dogs get their vegetables stir in some peas, corn, or diced carrots.

Snacks and Treats
Dogs can be given apple slices, oranges, bananas, and grapes as treats and rewards. The fruit is healthy and sweet. Dogs like sweets, but they cannot brush their teeth. So fruit sweets would be best to give them because fruit will not cause cavities and tooth decay.

Grilled cheese sandwiches make good snacks.

Junk food can cause the same health problems in dogs as in humans.

Always feed your dog cooked meat to help prevent intestinal worms.

Dogs want to be well fed too. They would like to eat something other than tasteless hard dry dog food. Giving them "people food" is perfectly alright. Wholesome nutritious food that is good for humans would be good for dogs too. A tasty meal can make a healthy happy dog.
