People Magazine Puts the Real McCain Family on Display

So they say a picture is worth a thousand words. After seeing the September 22nd cover of People Magazine featuring John McCain with his family, I must agree. Admittedly, I'm no big fan of his and I'm certainly not a supporter. Even if I was on the fence about who would get my vote this November, the Republican National Convention would have absolutely shoved me off said fence and firmly into Obama's camp.

I understand that many journalists have made an issue of the same thing that disturbed me, but I have yet to see any of those articles. All I know is that the people at the convention did not truly represent America. Last I checked, this country was made up of a lot more than wealthy looking white folks in business casual wear. If the party can't even truly represent the country, how can a representative from such skewed group of people possibly lead us anywhere we need to go? But I digress.

Even though I really wasn't looking for more information on John McCain, the cover of People Magazine told me more than I ever wanted to know about him and his family. I'm actually kinda surprised that he would allow this cover to be published. It tells the story that he's proud of and find his white children to be worthy enough to surround him, but the dark child he adopted? Her place is to kneel at the rest of the family's feet.

This cover is an absolute disgrace. Take a good look. The title is actually bigger than she is. To make matters even worse, she's placed in a position that would allow her to be easily cropped out without disturbing the images of the rest of the family. Or perhaps she was photoshopped in. I don't know.

If she were truly a part of this family why didn't she sit behind Cindy McCain's left shoulder? It would have gone a long way toward balancing out the photo since McCain has two sons and two daughters to his right, but only two sons to his left. Why can't Bridget sit on that side with them?

Perhaps that position is just a little too high profile for the dark one of the bunch. Or at least that's how it seems with the poor girl relegated to the feet of Cindy McCain. A spot more suitable for the family dog than a daughter who is loved and cherished.

But the thing that this cover screams the loudest is that neither John McCain nor any of his campaign staff sees anything wrong with this picture. If they did, you can bet it would never see the light of day. The fact that this picture was proudly displayed on newsstands across the country says to the rest of us in America that if you are clean cut and look like me, you're welcome to stand beside me. But if you're a little different, then your place is at my feet. I'll make sure some table scraps fall your way, though. Maybe...

I guess they're right. A picture is truly worth a thousand words. I don't know about you, but I'm worth a whole lot more than table scraps.

Thanks for reading, SS. It sounds like you haven't seen the photo, not that I think it would change your mind. McCain is not in the front as you suppose. He's in the middle. I think it's wonderful you embrace conservative values. Unfortunately, I don't think John McCain values anything except himself. As a result, your choice isn't really going to work out all that well. I just pray that we all don't have to live with the consequences.

Hi Kelly. Thanks for reading. It sounds like you didn't see her at all. She would've been below the bar of the newsstand. Sorry you have to go track the cover down. I uploaded a photo when I submitted the article, but I guess it was dropped. Here's a link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/16/john-mccains-empeopleem-c_n_126747.html

How crazy! Photographers decide who stands where for a shoot. IAs a person in the public eye myself, I've had many family photos myself and different photogs do it different ways. I could almost guarantee you that he is at the front for two reasons: he is short and he is the main person the article is about. Get a life. I am voting for McCain and I am far, far, far from wealthy as are many of my friends, but we embrace conservative values. How would you like it if I said, "I can never vote democrat because all they do is give welfare to a bunch of lazy people and keep them dependent." I don't think that because I work for a nonprofit and I know a lot of people have bad situations come into their lives. Your article is biased and judgmental.

Wow, now I need to go look at that photo again. I only glanced at it on the newsstand and my first impression once I spotted John McCain in the group and realized it was his family, was that his oldest soon looks middle-aged - it just gave me great pause. I didn't even notice anyone who wasn't white, but maybe she was below the little bar on the newsstand. Disturbing. Thanks for the perspective.
