People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People

Every year for the last eighteen years People Magazine has let us know who the most beautiful people in the world are. From 1990 to 2005 there were only fifty such people, but in 2006 the list increased to one hundred.

This year Drew Barrymore holds the coveted position on the cover. She has been an actress for many years, and most of America has watched her grow up on the silver screen. This makes the forth year that Drew is on the list.

Many of the celebrities that grace this year's issue were stars on hit TV shows. It would be interesting to know if a star's beauty causes a TV show to become a hit, or if a TV show is popular enough it causes the editors at the magazine to notice the stars. Patrick Dempsey from Gray's Anatomy is one of the top attractive males, and Tyra Banks made the list again. This is not surprising since she was a supermodel, has her own talk show, and starred in the popular reality show, America's Next Top Model. Tyra may be beautiful, but she is certainly not lazy. The popularity of American Idol helped Carrie Underwood and Katherine McPhee make it onto the list, because without that show nobody would know who they were.

Some other celebrities that made it on the list yet again were Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie, both Academy Award winners. The interesting thing about Angelina is that most people either think she is gorgeous or very ugly. Her personal life is unusual enough that she always has an enormous amount of media attention. Regardless of her looks, a magazine would be crazy not to put her on any list just for publicity reasons.

Helen Mirren had several distinctions on this years list, including it being her first time, being the oldest person on the list, and being one of seven Academy Award winners listed. All the other Academy winners have been on the list at least four times. This year makes Reese Witherspoon's forth year, Angelina Jolie's fifth year, George Clooney's seventh year, Nicole Kidman's eight year, and Julie Roberts and Halle Berry set a record with it being their eleventh year.

Forty-five of the one hundred most beautiful people this year were new to the list, with Trey Smith being the youngest at age fifteen. There were five Grammy winners, including Christina Aguilera, Fergie, Alicia Key, Beyonce Knowles, and Carrie Underwood. Laila Ali, Larid Hamilton, Candace Parker, and Gabrielle Reece were not only beautiful this year, but also athletic.
