People Who Have Plastic Surgery May Have a Mental Disorder

The Disorder is Called Body Dysmorphic Disorder or BDD

Michael Jackson was probably the worst. Maybe Joan Rivers was a close second. We all know how Michael looked before all of his plastic surgeries. He looked like a normal young black man. Just look at the "Thriller" video. He probably had already had a few plastic surgeries when he filmed the video. I'm certain that at least he had a nose job.

But after numerous plastic surgeries and a botched attempt to alter the color of his skin, his face literally began to fall apart. He became a total freak. Some people even questioned whether his nose had to be replaced with a plastic one because it had fallen off.

Joan Rivers wasn't nearly as bad as Michael, but over the years she had an awful lot of face lifts. But after all is said and done, she still looks like the really old woman that she really is with a few less wrinkles on her face..

We know that Michael Jackson had a mental condition. I think that anyone that was subjected to the childhood that he had would. I don't know that much about Joan River's early life as there doesn't seem to be a lot of information available other than she was born in Brooklyn from Russian/Jewish immigrant parents.

There are a lot of risks involved with plastic surgery. There's always the risk of infection, scaring, and even disfigurement. Even if the surgery is performed perfectly there is a long recovery period where the patient looks worse and is in a whole lot of pain. Unless it's a face reconstruction or to attach a limb, the surgery has no other purpose than for vanity...or you would think.

But now it's been discovered that there may be a mental illness involved. According to Medical News Today:

"The desire for plastic surgery, and in particular nose jobs, may be a tell tale sign of a mental illness called dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which is basically an unnatural preoccupation with slight or imagined defects in appearance."

To me, it's sort of like a person with anorexia, they think that they are overweight when they may be thin or of normal weight. People with BDD may think that a slight imperfection is a gross flaw in their appearance that has to be corrected.

People with this disorder tend to have multiple cosmetic surgeries and aren't satisfied with the results. I guess Michael had a really bad case. A recent study showed that one in three people who get nose jobs have this disorder. The report didn't note why those who got nose jobs had a higher rate of the disease over those that had work done on other parts of their bodies.

People who are diagnosed with this disorder probably shouldn't be given the surgery because the results will never satisfy them. It would sort of be like doing weight loss surgery on a person with anorexia. Almost criminal.
