"People of WalMart" Website Highlights the Uniquely Amusing WalMart Shopper

Daniel Tosh Surfs the Web so You Don't Have To... Who Has the Time Between Porn Clips?

Saul Relative
If there are two things that are universally funny, it is the half hour I spend a week doing two things. One is a trip to my local Wal-Mart, where, like many comedians now say somewhere in their act, you go to buy a few things and observe the people (?) that shop there to make you feel better about your own life. The other is "Tosh.0" on Comedy Central, where a half hour each Thursday evening gets you a laugh-filled 23 minutes of stuff Daniel Tosh has pulled from the internet that you didn't have time to go surfing for and 7 minutes of godawful commercials (including those pathetic Burger King ads that simply make you want to get a couple of 3-year-olds and give them a camera and let them do Burger King's commercials for them). But now Daniel Tosh has found a way for me to save the travel time (and the fake shopping time, cause I'm really just there as a casual observer; I mean, who really buys kumquats?) to Wal-Mart every week. Posted to the "Tosh.0" blog on Comedy Central is an report on "People of WalMart."

What? No. Can't be. Too simple. No way. Someone came up with a blog theme that 1) makes me laugh, 2) doesn't cost me anything, and 3) raises my self-esteem, self-worth, and feelings of superiority over my fellow human beings (term used loosely)? "People of WalMart" is simply genius. Or cruel. Or genius.

Or cruel. One shouldn't be amused at those less literate... or less educated... or with less fashion sense... or less sober... or...

Thank you, Daniel Tosh.

Inset in the upper right-hand corner of the website is a frowny face that is winking or has a black eye or its eye is swollen shut or something. The site posts pictures of the willfully indigent and the socially apathetic. It comes complete with WalMart accessorized patrons (favorite accessory seems to be beer).

People of the world, read up. "People of WalMart" is the place to go if you are looking for a little stress relief at the end of a long business day, or have had a long day dealing with your children, or if you've just got back from WalMart and the shoppers looked and acted normal for a change...

The great thing about the "People of WalMart" blog is that they're an equal opportunity WalMart abuser, posting pictures from all over. And you can submit your own pictures.

Another hilarious aspect: The site offers a photo contest. The prize? A $100 WalMart gift card. Priceless.

The creators of "People of WalMart" opened shop in August of 2009, saying that they are "three friends and roommates" who decided to create the blog "after an inspirational trip to WalMart." Their "About Us" page says it all and they flat-out tell users not to send in pictures of people goofing off (a.k.a. "dicking around"). And they stress the different between willfully oblivious to fashion and being handicapped ("don't be an a**hole," they admonish).

But remember who you're dealing with. It's rough out there in WalMart world and those wife-beater wearing, mullet-styling, cut-off jeans in combat boots sporting patrons might not appreciate your particular brand of humor. The site posted this disclaimer: "We would also like to stress that we are in no way liable if you get your ass beat by Bubba when he catches you taking his picture. Be discrete, have fun, and Enjoy!"

Thus far, no live action video, but you know it's coming. So if you want some live action, you've got to get in the car and get on down there...

Again, thank you, Daniel Tosh, for all you do.

Always.

I have seen so many of these inappropriately dressed people only on emails. Yes I agree some I see once in a while are a bit 'underdressed' but not to the extreme I'm seeing on these emailed shots. Are they for real?

I noticed you did a story about peopleofwalmart.com. Perhaps you might be interested in doing a follow up about People of Public Transit.

People of Walmart inspires sister site (People of Public Transit)

The public bus and subway systems are littered with amazing photo opportunities. Many of us have been sitting alone witnessing something amazing and only wishing we could share the experience with our friends. Well now you can!

If you're a fan of PeopleofWalmart.com, you'll probably get a kick out of this song, "(I'm Hungover) In The Wal-Mart Breakroom" http://dstriker.com/track/im-hungover-in-the-wal-mart-breakroom

Wow! Looking at some of those photos, I was amazed people would go to WalMart dressed (or undressed) like that. An article that is impossible to resist!

Your article was simply genius. Or cruel. Or genius--but anyway, it was simply hilarious! My favorite thing on Tosh.0 is when he allows people who have been humiliated on the internet redeem themselves.

the link isn't working to the "people of walmart" site anymore...bummer.

Hmmm...I could turn Tosh on to some great shoe cameras. His next blog will then be "People of Cellblock 4."

  • JustaGirl8/27/2009

Why can't I get on to see it?! I'm so mad that I can't laugh.
