Peoria Welcomes Chicago Mayor Richard Daly at Peoria Civic Center

Olympics, Wahington Day Banquet, Olympics, President Bush Plus Rock!

The Peoria Civic Center is in the news. In fact Peoria is in the news and, I live in Peoria, so, I guess by the algebraic transitive property, I am in the news.

Thursday, Chicago Mayor Richard Daly was at the Peoria Civic Center. The major reason that Daly was in Peoria at the Civic Center was to discuss Chicago's involvement in the running for the 2016 Olympics. The other cities in the running are Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janiero. His visit was reported by Channel 19, WHOI, which is the ABC affiliate in Peoria. He was the lead speaker at Peoria's 110th Washington day Banquet.

Daly's major quote as the television assessment says was "This is about much more than the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Chicago. It is about our country building bridges of friendship within the world and bringing the world to the U.S. This is about getting involved in the Olympic movement.

As I said, Daly's speech was at the 110th anniversary of Peoria's Washington Day Banquet. This is a black-tie affair I had the privilege to attend in the 1970's to hear John Madden, today's popular sports announcer and ex-coach of the Oakland Raiders.

No doubt another reason that Daly was in Peoria was that yesterday President Bush was in Peoria for a $500 per plate luncheon fundraiser for 18th Congressional candidate Aaron Schock.

In addition to aiding in the fundraiser for Schock who is replacing Peoria icon Ray LaHood, President Bush was in Peoria to give an Indian immigrant a service award for his work with children and retired people, Roy Story. Story was an orphan who came to the states in 1958 and at one time was tutoring 100 primary school children at one time.

Now, if that isn't enough Peoria Civic Center news for you, today, the popular retro-group Earth, Wind and Fire will be performing at the Center. As performers of "Best of My Love", "Let's Groove" and "Boogie Wonderland" the semi-soul group has re-acquired quite a following.

So, it seems my hometown of Peoria and specifically the Peoria Civic center have become very popular. Like I said, however, that makes me popular too!
