I really like granola bars and I love oatmeal cookies, and though I didn't really see why there was a need for Pepperidge to make a granola oatmeal cookie hybrid. But I was happy they did, and I decided to buy a bag.
There are four flavors of the granola cookies and two of them are crunchy versions and the other two are chewy versions. I prefer chewy cookies but the only flavors to choose from were Fruit & Nut or Trail Mix. Trail Mix isn't really my thing, but it sounded better than the Fruit & Nut cookies so I bought the Pepperidge Farm Chewy
Granola Trail Mix Cookies which costs $3.59 for a bag of 8.
The cookies are wide and come in the usual white Pepperidge Farm bag. They contain rolled oats, whole wheat flour, dark chocolate, raisins and almonds and a list of other ingredients. One cookie has 140 calories, and 50 of them are from fat. There are 6g of total fat, 2g of saturated fat, 5mg of cholesterol, 70mg of sodium, 20g of total carbohydrates, 2g of fiber, 9g of sugar, and 3g of protein in each cookie as well.
I ate a cookie later on that day and I thought it was really delicious. It tastes like a chewy oatmeal cookie but then there are slightly harder oats scattered throughout it that makes it have the texture and taste of a granola bar too.
I think it has more texture and flavor than the average oatmeal cookie but without all of the toughness of a granola bar. I also liked how the raisins were plump and really accented the flavor of these cookies.
But I couldn't stand the dark chocolate chunks that were scattered throughout this Chewy Granola cookie. I enjoy chocolate chips but big chunks of chocolate are just too much for me in a cookie. Plus I just don't like the taste of oatmeal and chocolate together, I just don't think the flavors go well together.
And while I like almonds I just didn't enjoy them in this cookie. I just felt like the almonds and the chocolate were overkill and it took away from the delicious flavor and texture of the cookie itself.
In the End...
I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of the actual cookie itself. Eating the Pepperidge Farm Chewy Granola Trail Mix Cookies was like eating the best of an oatmeal cookie and a granola bar, and the chewy texture was great. The cookies are huge and filling, so one is really satisfying.
But the Trail Mix flavor just wasn't for me. There was way too much chocolate in this chewy cookie and I could've done without the almonds too. I wish Pepperidge Farm had created a plain flavor or one with just raisins, but since they haven't I'd be willing to try the Chewy Granola Fruit & Nut flavor, because I'd like to enjoy this cookie without the chocolate.
Overall I would give the Trail Mix Flavor 4 out of 5 stars, it's not my cup of tea but I'm sure chocolate lovers would enjoy it. The cookie itself deserves 5 out 5 stars though, it's really great.
