One of the reasons that perch are not highly regarded game fish is that they reputation as not being good fighters. But as with other smaller fish, using lighter rods and reels can help to make the fishing more fun. Using smaller line, lures and hooks is an important perch fishing tip as the smaller offerings are harder for the fish to see.
Perch are generally easiest to catch in late summer through late fall and are also often caught by those who are ice fishing. Target your perch fishing to these times of the year, but perch can be caught year around.
One of the easiest perch fishing tips is to sleep in a little when going fishing for perch. Though many fish seem to bite well in the pre-dawn and dawn periods, perch often don't get going until a little later. Focusing roughly on the times of mid-morning and mid-afternoon is about right for perch. Bring along bass tackle for the early and late periods of the day. Overcast conditions can often produce good perch bites the entire day.
Whe\n choosing lures for perch fishing remember to keep them small. Those who are heading out for their first perch fishing trip will be fine with their standard lures for bluegill and especially crappie. A simple jig is my favorite lure to use for perch fishing. The body of the jig can be changed quickly to find what the perch are hitting and jogs can be fished quickly to cover a lot of ground.
Similar to lures, bait selection for perch fishing are similar to crappie and bluegill bait. Minnows are probably the most popular, but night crawler pieces, grubs, and other smaller baits will produce perch as well.
Perhaps the most useful of all perch fishing tips is to get the lure or bait back into the water quickly after catching one. Perch can often be caught in surprisingly large4 numbers in a short period of time when you find them.
