Perdido Key State Park

Whether you visit the park during the warm summer months or visit during the cool winter seasons, you're sure to find Perdido Key State Park full of fun outdoor activities that you and your whole family can enjoy year round. With miles of sandy beaches along the barrier islands Gulf of Mexico side, you and your fellow state park explorers are sure to find an empty spot to spread out and sunbath, swim or enjoy an afternoon picnic on one of Florida's most spectacular coast lines.

There are two parking areas at Perdido Key State Park. A series of boardwalks lead visitors over the fragile dune ecosystem that protects the inner habitats of the 247 acre barrier island. Traveling on these fragile dunes is prohibited and many steps such as planting native vegetation and sand fencing protect the dunes from further erosion.

Once you travel the boardwalk across the gorgeous dunes and sweet sea oats, the Gulf of Mexico side of the state park is available for all guests to enjoy. A series of picnic tables and shelters are available at both of the park entrances. Outdoor day use showers and restrooms are also at each entrance of Perdido Key State Park.

Surfers love the area when wave action is good. During winter months, surfing is at its best as many surfers can be viewed donning wet suits and braving the cooler temperatures of the gulf.

Beachcombers find Perdido Key State Park to be plentiful in shelling opportunities. Cockle shells, jewelbox, seas scallops and quahogs are often found along the shores of Perdido Key. Winter months are especially good for shelling and winter storms kick up some very interesting finds.

Opportunities to view rare predatory birds like osprey, bald eagles and red-tailed hawks are frequent at Perdido Key State Park. During fall and winter months, migratory birds use this corridor of the Florida west coast to travel to warmer feeding grounds.

Big Lagoon State Park is located directly across the bridge on the mainland, a short drive from Perdido Key State Park. Camping and hiking trails offer guests a great place to explore the lagoon side of the barrier island.
