Perez Hilton Blog Advertiser, Aptly Named 'The View,' Drops Ads During Miley Cyrus Photo Debate

Even Without Criminal Charges, Popular Blogger Could Face Advertiser Backlash

At least one advertiser on Perez Hilton's popular website, ironically named The View, may be reacting to too many views of Miley Cyrus photos, allegedly showing Cyrus without underwear. Will The View (and possibly MTV's TV Land) be only the first among many advertisers ready to desert the site, one which has at least two million viewers? If so, they could be eager to distance themselves from the Miley Cryrus photo scandal affecting Perez Hilton, according to Fox News.

According to child porn laws, it may not even matter whether Miley was actually wearing underwear or not when the photo was taken. Even if the photographer didn't get more than a view of her underwear, that may have been one view too many, crossing the line into child pornography.

Even if the picture was PhotoShopped, it still broke the law for porn featuring a minor (Cyrus is 17). At this point, ads for The View no longer show up on Hilton's site. ABC owns both The View and Disney. Miley Cyrus got her start on Disney, long before she was the center of several controversies for her choice of clothing, alleged lap dances and more.

ABC's The View may not be the only ad removed from Hilton's site. MTV Network's TV Land ads were also absent. How much will this affect the site's revenue?

Yes, Miley Cyrus is a celebrity and she has been criticized for appearing in clothing that is too skimpy. I wouldn't let a daughter wear those clothes, let alone perform a lap dance at a party, as Cyrus reportedly did. But, does her behavior and her upcoming, suggestively named Can't Be Tamed concert make her fair game for any photographer to draw views to a site by posting crotch shots of her (even if Cyrus was wearing underwear and the photos were altered)?

Apparently not. The laws pertaining to minors and pornography still apply to Cyrus, celebrity or not, and her choice of clothing or the title of her concert are irrelevant. The strict standards for child porn still apply.

This does not mean that Perez Hilton will face any criminal charges. It partly depends on whether Miley Cyrus decides to report this to the police, as well as whether a formal inquest is opened. Even so, it remains to be seen whether public outrage will cause more advertisers to pull their ads from Hilton's site. Whether formally charged or not, this could hurt the blogger if advertisers drop their ads from his site.

How could Perez Hilton be so stupid to do something like this? And to think he acted so high and mighty when he trashed Carrie Anne Prejean for her opinion on gay marriage!

Good grief. What is Perez going to do next?!

Great write up! It always sickens me when celebs end up getting even more endorsements and perks after doing something as ridiculous and messed up as this. So hopefully that won't be the case here. Obviously it's gained him more publicity, but I hope there will be some real consequences for this.
