Perez Hilton Disses Icon Grace Jones Over Lady Gaga

Simon Hattenstone's completely respectful article Grace Jones: 'God I'm scary. I'm scaring myself' on The Guardian (4/17/2010) is really about Grace Jones not Lady Gaga, believe it or not.

The legendary Miss Jones talks about her childhood in Jamaica and the States and growing up in a religious family. She discusses her life path frankly, including taking drugs, plastic surgery which she has never had, and even names the guy who was the inspiration behind "My Jamaican Guy."

She names her son, Paolo, who is a member of her band, as her proudest achievement in life, and she is appalled to learn that Simon Hattenstone doesn't know who Merv Griffin is.

Apparently, Perez Hilton has no concept of who Grace Jones is because he takes her comments in The Guardian article in response to questions on Lady Gaga and reports it as if it was said all at once:

"I really don't think of her at all. I go about my business. I'd just prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not copying me, actually. Well, you know, I've seen some things she's worn that I've worn, and that does kind of piss me off. I wouldn't go to see her."

He then exclaims: "Lameballs! We think there's nothing sadder than an washed-up diva who has to stay relevant by criticizing someone infinitely more successful than they ever were!"

Perez Hilton is a big Lady Gaga fan, but that is no excuse to write something so disrespectful to an original icon and pioneer such as Grace Jones. No one with any class or intelligence likes this, Perez. It's always a good thing for current artists to acknowledge their influences and inspirations.

Lady Gaga has compared herself to Grace in the past: "I look like Grace Jones, androgynous, robo, future fashion queen. It's not what is sexy. It's graphic, and it's art," she told Whitney Pastorek (EW/Popwatch) last year.

    Hilton is an abomination.

She's doing quite well, but perhaps it's a bit early for Perez to declare Lady Gaga "infinitely more successful" than Grace Jones. And yes, artists often do credit their influences and inspirations.

I never cared for Perez; I always found his relevance to be founded on self promotion. Plus, his comments are not funny, they're mostly nasty and ill-willed.

Come on. Perez himself riding on other people's talent to make himself relevant. The pot is always calling the kettle black.
