Perez Hilton Vs. TMZ - Who Really Has the Best Gossip?

E. Lynn
When looking for the newest and latest celebrity gossip there are hundreds of web-logs and news sources to consider. Topping the list are tmz.com and perezhilton.com. But when you only have 10 minutes to catch up on the best of the best, which do you choose?

With Perez boasting 4 million daily hits, his spot in internet-stardom has been well cemented. He is known for breaking news on pregnancies, famously outing celebrities, and as being always armed with a paintbrush to write witty remarks and draw (sometimes disturbing) bodily fluids and appendages on celebrities and political figures. On top of internet domination, VH1 has picked up Perez for a few specials called "What Perez Sez."

Perez's site updates several times daily with the latest celebrity sightings and rumors as well as interesting news stories, promoting musical artists (maybe you've heard of Amy Winehouse? Mika?) and finding the latest internet fads.

A word to the wise, Perez often posts disturbing images and videos under "If you are easily offended.... Do not click here" and he often means it. Readers were outraged late in 2007 when Perez posted a link to a sexual fetish video that left many sick to their stomachs, according to reader comments.

Speaking of comments, within minutes of posting hundreds of Perez's readers have already left comments, ranging from the ever-irritating "First!" to website spam and sometimes cruel words to Perez himself. On the whole, most people will just write their feelings about the post.

Perez's style ranges for each celebrity. For every clear favorite (Angelina Jolie, Agyness Deyn) he has, he definitely has at least two celebrities he makes it known he cannot stand. Facing lawsuits and personal threats haven't stopped him from bringing in the newest, juiciest gossip, though. Also in 2007 a lawsuit brought on by former Lindsey Lohan hanger-on Samantha Ronson, an LA deejay, was thrown out and Ms. Ronson was ordered to pay Hilton's attorney's fees. Score one, freedom of speech!

At the other end of the endless updates in Holly-weird you have TMZ, which has managed to maintain a relatively good reputation when it comes to reporting celebrity news. They shy away from news stories and internet fads, unlike Perez. TMZ has made a name for itself for its fantastically quick breaking news and for moving successfully to a 30 minute television show that recaps the day's hottest stories and keeping up on past stories.

TMZ broke stories about Mel Gibson's arrest, Britney's beginning of the year hospitalization, and Anna Nicole Smith's death. On top of breaking news stories, TMZ regularly posts celebrities answering the burning questions, asked by TMZ employees. TMZ favorites include John Mayer and Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband Prince Frederick Von Anhalt, who they refer to as Prince Von A-hole because of his frequent, opinionated and terse comments towards today's stars.

TMZ also checks their sources religiously before posting anything. While Perez was talking about JLo's twins and Angie's pregnancy, TMZ held their tongues until JLo's father confirmed the twins and Angie debuted her baby bump. One can almost always be able to rely on the information posted on TMZ.

It would be fair to say TMZ keeps it classy. While you can see actual nipple slips and crotch shots on Perez's site, TMZ keeps things censored. The worst TMZ seems to get is their "witty" obituary titles which have caused some outrage in the comment section of their website.

If one is looking for quick updates Perez has the market cornered with multiple updates an hour. But a lot of posts are NSFW and even those that are safe for work may be slightly offensive to most people. His website is quickly growing and is definitely regarded as a force in the celebrity blogosphere.

But for quality, work friendliness and some awesome videos, head to tmz.com. While it doesn't update as much as perezhilton.com on most days, they are always on top of the most controversial photos and stories.

By choosing either one can be sure to have some great water cooler chat materials and to be up to date with Hollywood's latest. As well as nearly constant entertainment right at your fingertips.

I've never really paid much attention to Perez. He seems obnoxious. I do tune in to TMZ sometimes just for kicks!

Oh dear, he is really something. I think his comments are very immature and ruthless.

I am such a Perez fan. There is something more personable to him than TMZ...they just strike me the wrong way.
