Relevant Facts about Perf Go-Green and the "Green Movement"

Perf Go-Green Holdings, Inc. became an official company in Delaware at the beginning of 2008 (H.R. Securities, 2008). At this time, Spectrum Bags Inc. had acquired ESYS Holdings, Inc and renamed it "Perf Go-Green" for the company's venture into environmentally friendly plastic products and made arrangements with the SEC to operate and trade stock under the name (PGOG, 2010). Spectrum bags, Inc. has a long history of packaging that dates back to 1985. The company specializes in a wide variety of packaging and supplies over half of the top 100 companies in the United States (Spectrum, 2010).

Perf Go-Green, Inc. focuses on biodegradable plastic products. The mission statement for this division is "from inception to create a GREEN company for the development and global marketing of 100% eco-friendly, non-toxic, food contact compliant 100% biodegradable plastic products as a practical and viable solution to eliminating plastic waste from the world environment" (Perf, 2010). Available in the company's biodegradable plastic product line are trash and leaf bags, drop cloths, and pet clean-up bags. The trash and leaf bags are the most common and the company's top sellers. The Perf Go-Green products degrade within two years in landfills in the presence of microorganisms, moisture and oxygen into particles naturally found in the environment. In addition, the company uses partially recycled plastic in the construction of the bags (Perf, 2010). The two year biodegradable concept is remarkable when compared to the average plastic bag, which can take up to 500 years or more to break down, according to scientists (Lapidos, 2007). A review in the magazine "Green Living" found the bags to be very sturdy, as well as good for the environment (Theriault, 2009).

The "green garbage bag" concept was welcomed with open arms by both retailers and consumers. By the end of the same year that Perf Go-Green was official by the SEC's standards (2008), the company had already contracted with several large retailers to carry the product. One of the first major names to offer the garbage bag was Walgreen's (Berry, 2008). This move was quickly followed by the end of the same month by the "Do It Best" hardware store chain (John, 2008). Walmart contracted with the company two and a half months later, in January of 2009. At that time, the product was available at 22,000 stores nationwide and additional locations online (Globe, 2009). Perf Go-Green degradable plastic bags had struck a nerve with retailers and consumers alike. This "ease of purchase" for the consumer makes the product a low involvement hierarchy of effect, making it easy for the consumer to "go green" without having to put in a lot of effort.

A Harris poll in 2008 showed that 37% of Americans consider themselves to be green, but only 21% of all American businesses were green (McNerny, 2008). This number falls slightly behind several European countries and substantially behind others, such as Germany which is at a 70% green population. Worldwide, most citizens are skeptical that companies are doing all that they can to be green (McNerny, 2008). However, despite the fact that most Americans feel that they could to more to be green, 80% consider themselves to be environmentalists and highly concerned with artificial waste in the environment (PBS.org, 1996).

Perf has a bright beginning and solid roots. The company's message of preserving tomorrow through actions that are preformed today are truly a hallmark of the green movement. This new technology will surely benefit future generations and other brands are sure to follow. One can only hope that other biodegradable plastic products, such as biodegradable sandwich bags, will follow.
