Perfect Dark FPS for N64 Released Again on X-Box Live

Perfect Dark was created by Rare in 2000 and acted as a spiritual sequel to the popular Goldeneye 007. The game look like an upgraded form of this popular shooter and even includes some of the same weapons as a quiet homage to 007. The game reached huge popularity for its impressive gameplay and very fun multiplayer. X-Box live has recently released it as a dowloadable game. It's a title that is certainly worth taking a look at, and it can be just as much fun now as it was then.

Setting and Plot

Perfect Dark is set in 2023 on Earth. Joanna Dark, the main character of the game, is an agent for The Carrington Institute, a company that provides information and hired guns for anyone who pays for it. As Joanna investigates a certain group of evil people, it is revealed that she is dealing with more than human forces, however. Joanna gets caught up in an alien war between the friendly Maians, who resemble the grey, big headed stereotypical aliens of popular culture and the Skedar, lizard like creatures who disguise themselves as humans. Joanna has to help the Maians, particularly a friendly one stuck on Earth who calls himself Elvis, as she investigates and kills the Skedar. To do this, Joanna goes on a series of 17 missions which involve killing, stealth, and completing objectives, much like Goldeneye 007. The storyline of Perfect Dark is very interesting and engaging. It is full of interesting intrigue and a variety of missions and areas that keep you interested. The game, however, is very adult, rated M for mature and includes a lot of foul language.

Gameplay

Like any good secret agent, especially a futuristic one, Joanna has a number of cool and realistic gadgets including camera spy robots who shoot poison darts, computer hacking devices, and x-ray glasses. Of course the best part of the game is the guns and Perfect Dark doesn't hold back. The game has an almost endless inventory of fun and creative weapons. Each of these weapons contain secondary modes which make them twice as exciting and fun. One machine gun, for example, turns into a grenade launcher in secondary mode. Another becomes a proximity mine which you can throw to the ground so unsuspecting enemies will walk up to it and explode. Weapons and ammo are picked up off of the ground by walking over them, so it's certainly a dirty trick to turn a gun into an explosive. This is just one of many examples of the guns of this game. Others include alien guns that shoot explosive bullets, another alien gun that can shoot through walls and let you look through walls as you snipe people in other rooms, and yet another is a missile that you control through first person, looking for victims and leaving you vulnerable to enemy attack.

With so much crazy weaponry to play with, it's no wonder that the best part of the game is the multiplayer. The mode allows four players and up to eight simulants to all play together on over ten stages. The mayhem is extremely fun and includes great modes like king of the hill, which involves finding a small green area and holding it for a minute while killing everyone who tries to stop you. Another fun mode is capture the flag which allows teams to work together to play the classic game.

Perfect Dark is an excellent game that I would recommend to anyone who loves a good shooter. It got excellent reviews when it came it out and continues to be a great game for everyone to enjoy.
