Perfect Holiday Gift Ideas for Someone Who Loves to Send Letters and Cards

Heidi Bitsoli
Do you know someone who enjoys sending cards and handwritten letters? Yes, it does seem to be a dying art, but there are people who still enjoy doing things the old-fashioned way. Here are some perfect holiday gift ideas for such a person.

Stationery: You can't go wrong with this one. Buy some simple cream-colored stationery, which is always elegant, maybe something with gold trim. If your letter-writing friend is into gardening or birds, for example, look for paper with some flowers or a parrot as part of the design. You can pick up nice stationery in any number of places. Barnes & Noble, Borders or Papyrus all have excellent options. Hollander's (in Ann Arbor, Mich.) also has a nice assortment of stationery, including Pomegranate stationery sets.

Besides writing paper you can always buy card sets. A multipack of a favorite theme of your gift recipient's is always a good idea. You can get cards with initials, angels, fashion illustrations, kittens, gold leaf and more. The variety is limitless. It's better to choose cards which are blank inside, then they can be used for greetings, thank-you's and more. More flexibility is always a good thing.

Stamps: These are essential for the letter and card writer, and they are always going up in price. Stamps can be bought at just about any grocery or convenience store, or you can go to the post office.

Or, visit the U.S. Postage Store online, shop.usps.com, where you can buy everything from "Forever" postage to holiday, art and commemorative stamps.

An address book or a weekly calendar book: This is always handy. It allows a person to update their address book, include birthdays, e-mail addresses, anniversaries and more. Just like with cards and writing paper sets, the styles and themes are unlimited. All you need to do is shop online or in stores and you'll find plenty of ideas and styles.

Pens: Anyone who loves to write cards and letters would surely love a nice pen. Fountain pens, gel ink pens or plain old ballpoints are all good. If you can judge the recipient's tastes and line it up with your budget, this is a nice touch. And some pens are a good price. For a couple dollars you can get a pen in your friend's favorite color and have them scribbling on their way.

Stickers and more: Some people love to seal their letters and note cards with a sticker. Have a friend who loves the ballet and writing cards? How about including stickers of ballet slippers with the card set? You can pick these up virtually anywhere, from your local Hallmark store to places like Target. Craft stores are also a good place to go for these items. Check out your area Michaels or Jo-Ann store for a huge supply of stickers and seals.

Stationery box: You can pick up nice boxes to hold stationery, stamps and more at most craft shops. Michael's and Jo-Ann Craft and Fabric Stores have a nice variety at a decent price range. It doesn't even have to be a stationery box, either, but virtually any kind of storage box or covered basket would do the trick. Depending on the look of the container, you might not even need to wrap it. Just tie a bow around it with the goodies stashed inside and you're good to go!

Although email is quick, I feel special when someone takes the time to send a letter or card, hand-written. It just adds extra meaning, depending on the reason.
