PERFECT PRESENTS

Kathryn Neff Perry
I hopped on one foot, closed the door with the other, behind me. He wasn't home yet so I had to hurry. For whatever reason I've put off Christmas shopping for my husband this year. Part of the reason, he's normally with me.
I was so excited as I picked each gift, one at a time, thinking why he would think I had selected the perfect gift, just for him.
I sat on the floor, tape, scissors and paper, ready to wrap. Christmas carols were softly playing in the background and Meko was sitting on the floor, hoping maybe inside one of those bags would be a treat for him.

I wrapped the presents, stacked them under the tree and sat back sipping a glass of egg nog. The dogs heard him first. I rushed to the door and said, "come quick, you have to look under the tree. You have some surprises. Aren't you excited?"
He smiled, but didn't seem all that enthused.
He pulled off his ball cap, scratched his head, "who are all those presents for?"
"You, of course." I smiled, "Santa thought you were a good boy this year."
He shook his head.
I said, "Honey, there can't be more than five hundred dollars under there."
I thought his head would blow off. "Five hundred dollars? You've got to be kidding."
"I meant to say, fifty." I said.
Knowing he always tries to out do me. I can't wait to see what he comes up with this year.
He always stops on Christmas Eve at the pawn shop, on his way home from the golf course.
I bet I'm in for a surprise this year too.
