Perfect Valentine's Day Treat for School; Candy Apples with a Touch of White

A Cheap and Yummy Classroom Idea

Angel Vee
When it comes to Valentine's Day what color do you think? The hottest colors are red, pink, and white if purchasing flowers, or making food. Finding that perfect Valentine treat for a school party is so difficult, because you can't have too much sugar and you have to be extremely careful with anyone with peanut allergies. What can the teachers or parents make that will not only be healthy, but fun, creative, and cheap?

How about decorative apples? Apples are the right color red for Valentine's Day, healthy, and can be made so many different ways. You don't want to bring a plain old red apple that's quite boring.

Red Hot Cinnamon Apples With A Touch Of White

Ever make the red candy apples for Halloween? Well, add a twist to them and create Valentine's Day apples. To make them more festive you need to add a touch of white. If allowed you can use white sprinkles, white Snow Caps, Coconut shavings, or even whip up some granola and color it white would work as well.

How To Make Candy Apples For Valentine's Day

You will need 2 cups of Red hots, 3 tablespoons of hot water, and 12-16 apples. Make sure you buy the big crunchy ones, because the small Macintosh get way too mushy.

In a large pan place the water and the candy into it. Put the flame on medium and allow the candy to melt until it's a nice thick consistency and all you see is particles of the candy remaining. Remove and cool down for 20 minutes.

Gather up all your apples and place them onto a cookie sheet. It can greased if desired. Now you need to choose your stick. You can search for actual candy apple sticks, use craft sticks, or even popsicle sticks as long as the weight of the apple can hold up. I prefer using chopsticks. They are stronger, more durable, and hold the apples better. Stick a stick into each apple. Then drench an apple one at a time into the candy mixture. Make sure you coat it extremely well. Now coat with the Snow Caps. Place back on cookie sheet and allow the apples to toughen and harden up. Figure 10-20 minutes should be sufficient enough.

Want to get extra fancy? Add some lace around each apple. Then when it comes time to eat them remove the lace. This looks very pretty.

Not a fan of apples, why not make a red, white, and pink Valentine popcorn bag? Kids will love this sweet idea. Either buy the colored popcorn or create your own.

Then place into a clear goody bag. At the top place a huge red bow, cute little stickers all over, and then place a Valentine's Day pencil either through the bow or put in the bag.

I don't know a single school anywhere where they allow homemade food anymore. So as nice as this may sound it isn't likely to be used.

If I didn't like caramel so much, I might try this. Then again, I do have grandchildren who might like to try this ;)

Cool idea. With schools moving away from sweets, this is a perfect compromise.
