I arrived at the Perfect Vegetarian Foods restaurant in the afternoon and it was packed for lunch. I dined alone and was seated at a large round table with other vegetarians who were also dining alone. Being seated at a table with strangers was kind of fun as I could check out what the other local patrons were eating. Perfect Vegetarian Foods features a lunch time vegetarian Dim Sum menu, but most customers seemed to be enjoying the restaurants' main course dishes. Most main course dishes were served in a dish made of a large bamboo stalk, that had a lid to keep your food warm. All main course dishes we served with rice, soup and a small plate of steamed bok choi in a garlic sauce.
For lunch I ate an order of Pork Steamed Buns, Deep Fried Dumplings, Shanghai Style Steamed Dumplings and a plate of the Assorted Mock Meats. The Pork Steamed Buns (3pcs) were absolutely delicious and tasted just like Pork Steamed Buns I have eaten at other Chinese restaurants. The steamed bun was soft and delicious. The mock pork mixture inside the steamed bun had a nice chewy texture and the sauce was sweet and brown.
The Deep Fried Dumplings (3pcs) were good but not as I would have expected and nothing like anything I have eaten in a Chinese restaurant before. The outside was not made of noodle but instead made of a thick chewy rice dough. The inside was stuffed with some cubed potatoes, was sweet not savory and tasted of 5 spice powder.
The Shanghai Style Steamed Dumplings (3pcs) were delicious. Shanghai Style Dumplings have the outer noodle pinched together at the top rather than the traditional dumpling style in which the noodle is pinched together around the edges. They are served in a pool of their own spicy dumpling sauce rather than having the sauce served on the side for dipping.
The plate of Assorted Mock Meats was also delicious. This seemed to be a specialty take out item as well. There were 7 different kinds of vegetarian mock meats featured and they all had their own special flavor and sauce. A great way to try them all.
The food at this fine vegetarian restaurant is very fresh and as such some dishes come out of the kitchen more quickly than others. To learn how to eat your vegetarian food Hong Kong style, take a minute to observe the local customers as they roll their teacups and soup bowls in hot tea to warm them up. Also, Perfect Vegetarian Foods has a very small grocery section in the front of the restaurant, where you can purchase some mock meat to cook for yourself at home. The restaurant staff at Perfect Vegetarian Foods was accommodating but they do not speak much English. Luckily the menu is conveniently presented in English as well as Chinese and features many pictures. Just point at the dish you want on the menu.
Directions to Perfect Vegetarian Foods: Using the Hong Kong MTR, get off at the Wong Tai Sin subway stop and use Exit B3. When you reach the top of the exit stairs you will see the Wong Tai Sin Temple is a short walk to your right. Perfect Vegetarian Foods is in the Lung Cheung Mall on the left. Simply walk through the glass doors to the mall and Perfect Vegetarian Foods is the first establishment on your right and is clearly maked by their sign which is one of my pictures for this article.
**While in Hong Kong I also dined vegetarian at the restaurant Kung Tak Lam Shanghai Vegetarian Cuisine. Please visit my AC review of this great restaurant.
