There are several types of Neti as per yoga but the main two types are Sutra Neti and Jal Neti. The Neti is to be performed after brushing your teeth in the morning with completely empty stomach. The procedure for performing Sutra Neti is simple. Take the clean, white cotton thread, with the wax applied on it. Such Sutra Neti can easily be obtained from any yoga school. Sit down on your feet, raising your neck a little. Wet the cotton thread with water and put the waxed end of the thread in the active nostril at the time of performing Neti and slowly go on inserting it inside the nostril till it reaches the throat. Pull the thread with your fingers from your mouth and pull it outside your mouth. Repeat the same procedure with the second nostril also. After few days practice, start giving some small jerks to the thread with your hands by holding both the ends of the thread in your hands and finally take out the thread out by pulling it from one of its ends. Make sure to wash the thread thoroughly after the use so that no impurity remains on it. If rubbing of thread inside the nostril causes some burning sensation and some traces of the blood is observed, apply couple of drops of ghee inside the nostrils in the beginning of Neti. This burning sensation and the blood traces would go away soon within around 10 days of practicing Neti.
The second way to perform Neti is by using water, which is called Jal Neti. A bowl, lota or a suitable pot with the pipe like opening is to be used for this Jal Neti. Also, make sure to dissolve some salt in the lukewarm water and fill the pot with the water. Raise the active nostril at the time of performing Neti to one side and insert the pipe like end in it. Open your mouth and start breathing through it. Now tilt the pot in such a way that the water goes inside the nostril and comes out of the second nostril, which is at the lower level. Repeat the same process through the second nostril. One point of caution is never to breathe through your nose while performing this Neti. Moreover, Bhastrika pranayama must be performed after this Jal Neti. Then, bow your head down a little and move your neck in all the directions slowly. Then, perform Bhastrika pranayama inhaling the air and exhaling out the air forcefully through both the nostrils. This would clean the nostrils thoroughly and no water traces would be left in the nose.
The process of Neti purifies the skull, improves the eyesight, and protects the body from all the diseases of ears, nose, throat, and the windpipe. The headache and deafness of the ears are cured permanently. The undesired growth of the nasal bone is also prevented by this practice. One feels very light headed and fresh, full of energy by this practice. It also cures all the diseases pertaining to the brain and sharpens the memory power. The sleeplessness is also cured within a period of few days of doing Neti. However, one must start this practice under the close supervision of a knowledgeable person, at least for a few initial sittings. Then, the individual develops a skill and can perform this act himself without any problems.
I would suggest all my AC friends to start this practice at the earliest and derive all its benefits, which are tremendous in nature and magnitude. I myself have been practicing this Neti since last two years and am happy to state that I have been benefited maximum by remaining fit as fiddle.
