If you struggle with depression try these top five yoga poses (asanas) to lift your spirits. You should also consider making an appointment with your healthcare provider.
#1 Wild Thing (Camatkarasana)
The wild thing is a type of backbend. Backbends can be very energizing, but beginners should consider practicing them over a stability ball. Wild thing has the ability to ward off both depression and tiredness. The name itself sounds fun and exciting, and perhaps that will beat some depression as well. Get wildly rejuvenated by practicing the wild thing!
#2 Extended Puppy Pose (Uttana Shishosana)
Child's pose and downward facing dog blend together to create the extended puppy pose. This asana is super for soothing the mind to relieve stress and mild depression. Hold this pose to relax the body and mind.
#3 Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana)
Uttanasana has a way of relaxing the mind. Elena Brower, who works at Virayoga says that the standing forward bend is "really good for generating a contemplative, connecting state in us."
#4 Handstand (Adho Mukha Vrksasana)
Handstand is mountain pose upside down, with the arms in a different location. This asana helps ward off mild depression and soften stress.
#5 Supported Headstand (Salamba Sirsasana)
Standing on your head in the proper position relaxes the brain and helps to counter stress. You will also tone your abs at the same time, which should boost your mood as well. While yoga is an excellent exercise, it is important to follow safety precautions. Those who are new should avoid putting an overabundance of weight on their neck and head when getting in and out of this asana to prevent injury.
