The pranayama exercises, if performed on daily basis, can bring eternal healthiness and a human being can surely live for 100 years without the need of any doctor or medicines. One of the most beneficial exercises in pranayama is to carry out three bandhas at a time. These three bandhas can help the human body to remain fit and also help to perform various other pranayamas. These three bandhas (lockings) are known as Jalandhar bandha, Udiana bandh, and the Moola bandh in yogic language. I would explain how each of these bandhs is carried out in this article.

Let us start with Jalandhar Bandh. Sit straight in either Padhmasana or Sukhasana with your eyes closed, taking slow and deep breaths, concentrating in your mind. Lower your neck in such a way that your chin touches your neck. Then, concentrate between your two eyes with your chest heaving slightly forward. Hold your breath as long as you can and then, release this lock after around 45 seconds or so. Repeat this exercise for around 5 to 10 times every day. This bandh improves the quality of your voice. All the diseases pertaining to neck, throat like tonsils, thyroid, and the wind pipe are cured by doing this bandh regularly. The second bandh is Udiana bandh. Breathe out with full force, thus emptying your lungs. Try to expand your chest a little and push your stomach back as much as possible so that it touches your spine in the back. Try to maintain this position for as long as you can maintain. The maximum time for which this bandh can be performed is for one minute. However, most of us would be able to maintain this position for around 30 seconds at the best. Repeat this exercise for around 8 to 10 times in every sitting. However, in the beginning, try to restrict this bandh for only 3 times to avoid fatigue. If you feel tired in between, relax by taking the deep and slow breaths. This bandh cures all the diseases pertaining to stomach and all the digestive organs. The constipation is cured for sure within a very short period by this bandh. This bandh awakens and activates energy circle, known as Manipur chakra in the human body. This results in to feeling extremely fresh with the highest flow of energy through the entire body.

The third bandh is called as Moola bandh. Start sitting in yoga position. Breathe in very deep and slow as much as possible. Hold your breath for some time. Try to push your perineum up, part of your body between anus and the genital organ, to the maximum, holding your breath. In this position, your stomach portion would be pulled up. Try to remain in this position and then, release the breath. This bandh can also be done with lot of ease after exhaling without any air inside your body. Repeat this exercise, both with air inside your lungs and air outside your lungs. Initially, try to perform this bandh after the exhalation. Slowly, after around two weeks, start practicing this pranayama with air inside your lungs, holding your breath. This exercise may be done for around 5 times in both the combinations in each sitting. This bandh can cure disease like piles, if performed regularly. It also improves the digestion and cures diseases pertaining to intestines. The sexual prowess can also be increased by doing this pranayama. Experienced yogis can remain in this bandh for several hours. However, the long time practice of this bandh may only be done under close supervision of trained and knowledgeable yogi. This bandh can help greatly in awakening of the kundalini, pushing the Apan vayu up in the body. The regular practice of this bandh can cure gas and acidity problems on permanent basis. When all these three bandhs are done simultaneously, it is called Mahabandh. You must achieve Mahabandh posture for around one minute to begin with. This time period can be increased to around 3 minutes maximum. Mahabandh helps in increasing the density of semen, improving the content of Shukranus in it. The capability to perform sexual act for a long time can be easily achieved by practicing this Mahabandh.

The regularity is the essence of pranayama. One should continue practicing this bandhs to get the benefits as enlisted. The long breaks in doing it would prevent the benefits to occur immediately. However, continuous practice of around 2 to 3 months would surely fetch you all the benefits as listed here in. If any of my AC friends have any questions on this, they are free to contact me.
