Peril's Delight

Dr. Jamie Yvette
Heaven slowly drifted away
as callused hands reached toward the sky
and broken spirits cried out,
aware that they were being left behind

Scores of angels missed the outbound flight
Their beautiful wings had been singed
by the cruel flames of misfortune
much to peril's sheer delight

Their futures would unfold
against the backdrop of the desolate night
as they scattered about the darkness
without the sustenance of life needed to survive

One by one their weary souls would perish,
and evaporate into the vast, open space
a disaster of epic proportions;
their haven had vanished without a trace

Thank you Eric for your comments. I was deeply touched as I read about your situation and your compassion for animals. You seem to have a heart of gold and others can learn a lot from your example.

I had to recently sell my mobile home which was in the same spot for 15 years in a park. The trees I had planted when I first got there were twice as tall as my house when I left them. But sadly, I also had to leave a feral colony of cats that had grown accustomed to me feeding them for the last 10 years. When I read this poem, I immediately thought of "my cats" as the angels that were spoke of. At least I did my best to insure they didn't have any babies to rely on them (had them all spayed and neutered). Still, I'll always remember each and every one of them. Be kind to animals and each other, folks.

You reached me in a different way, Dr., I messed up my job after 32 years because of drinking and now am trying to find my way.

Thank you Lisa and Deborah. I was motivated to write this poem around Sept. 11 but didn't know if anyone would really get it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
